Before entering medical school, aspiring surgeons have to complete undergraduate school to earn bachelor's degrees. These 4-year degrees do not have to focus specifically on medicine; however, curricula should focus heavily on sciences to prepare students for the strong emphasis on science in medical school. Courses in anatomy, biology, chemistry, math and physiology may be beneficial.
The specific procedures a plastic surgeon performs depend on specialty. For example, cosmetic surgeons may perform breast augmentations or liposuction. surgeons treat conditions in the face and head such as cleft palate. Burn surgeons remove dead flesh, graft new skin and work to shorten scarring on burn victims.
