Dear Families,


I am grateful to welcome back our returning Hawks to the 2019-2020 school year! I’m excited to begin my sixth year at Havel. To our new families, welcome to Havel! We’re excited to have you and your students as a part of our learning community. This is the first of many weekly emails you will receive from me! I do my best to communicate through weekly during the regular school year! We use email for communication. I will also utilize social media on Facebook and Instagram to disseminate information as well! You do not have to have your own account to view these, they are all public!

I have a lot of information to cover in this Email, so, please forgive the length!

Classroom Sneak Peek

The school will be open for a classroom “sneak peek” from 4:00-5:00 p.m. on August 28th. I hope to see you there, as this will allow students the chance to become acquainted with the school and classrooms so that their first day of the new school year will run smoothly. Please take this opportunity to drop off any suggested school supplies that you may have..Please see the flyer below for more information.

Classroom Assignments

This year, we will communicate grade level classroom assignments for your child in a convenient and secure manner. We will be emailing the classroom assignments to you directly using the e-mail addresses on file in PowerSchool on Wednesday, August 28, 2019. Your child’s assignment can also be viewed via the PowerSchool Parent Portal that will be available beginning Wednesday, August 28, 2019. If you do not receive an email or are unable to access the information through the Parent Portal by the end of the day on Wednesday, August 28, 2019, please contact the office!

Security Procedures

Havel Families:


We are asking for your assistance to ensure that our security procedures during the school day are effective. As many of you know, our school has a security camera, intercom, and buzzer at the front entrance for use during the school day. To help us assist you when you would like to enter the school:


1. Please press the buzzer to speak with someone in the office

2. You will be asked to state your name and reason for visiting

3. You will be asked to show your photo ID into the security camera above the outside door

4. Office staff will then be able to buzz you inside

5. All visitors must immediately register in the office


In addition, we are asking you to not let any visitors in the door as you enter (and they come up behind you) or as you exit the building.


The teachers and staff are committed to student safety and security and we would like to thank you for your assistance in helping keep the students of Havel safe.

First Day Of School

The first day of school will be Tuesday, September 3rd. Students may arrive at 8:50 and dismissal will be at 12:04.


On the first day of school we are asking that our kindergarten students line up on the playpad outside of your kindergarten classroom doors. Your teachers will meet you there!

2019-2020 Calendar Dates

The Utica Community Schools teacher/student calendar for 2019-2020 continues to be mutually developed through the collective bargaining process. In the interest of planning, the following dates are confirmed and may be shared with students, staff, parents and community.


  • First Student Day: Tuesday, September 3, 2019 (Full-day secondary, Half-day elementary)
  • Thanksgiving Break: Wednesday, November 27, 2019 through Friday, November 29, 2019
  • Winter Break: Monday, December 23, 2019 through Wednesday, January 1, 2020
  • MLK Jr Holiday: Monday, January 20, 2020
  • Mid-Winter Break: Monday, February 17, 2020 through Friday, February 21, 2020
  • Spring Break: Monday, April 6, 2020 through Friday, April 10, 2020


Additional dates and calendar elements including but not limited to potential further closed dates, half-days, exam schedules, conference windows and the last day of school continue to be considered and will be released once determined.

Save The Date- Curriculum Night

Our Curriculum Night will be on Tuesday, September 10th at 6:30 in the Havel Gym. More info to come!

Our district utilizes the SchoolMessenger system to deliver text messages, straight to your mobile phone with important information about events, school closings, safety alerts and more.

School Age Child Care

Phone in registration for the 2019-20 school year begins July 5, 2019
Paper work drop off night: August 28, 2019 (6:00 pm - 7:30 pm)
Call 586-797-6980 to register.

Please contact our School Age Child Care Office by phone or in person to make registration payments.
Payments for new registrations WILL NOT be accepted at the individual school buildings.
You MUST contact the SACC office to pay your registration fee PRIOR to bringing in your paperwork to your child's SACC site.
Your account must be in credit status or at a zero balance to register.

Registration Fee: $60 per child / $75 per family (non-refundable)

Registration Paperwork
All registered students must have a completed registration packet on file with the school. Registration packets should be printed and turned in directly to the SACC director at your child's school the evening of August 28, 2019 between the hours of 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm. If you choose to register for Automatic Payment or would like to request an online access code for payments, please also print the Tuition Express forms. Tuition Express forms must be mailed or dropped off in person to the SACC office located in the Community Education Center 38901 Dodge Park Road Sterling Heights, MI 48312.

Please note, for more than one child, you will need to print the packet for a single child plus 1 copy for each child of the additional children packet. For example, if you have 3 children, print one copy of the above packet, plus two copies of the packet below.
