Lolo School Band directed by Ms. Gustafson

Lolo School is excited to offer band for any student who would like to join in grades 5-8, the bands are divided into 3 different groups: 5th Grade Band, 6th Grade Band and 7th/8th Grade Band. All bands meet during school except for Thursday afternoons when I offer sectionals after school for 5th grade band, those days 5th grade students will have a chance to meet with smaller groups, check the schedule attached to this newsletter to find out which Thursdays your childs instrument group is meeting. If your child wants to be a part of band, please fill out the google form by September 9th and have an instrument for your child by the week of the 12th if possible. Feel free to email me with any questions. I can't wait to see your child in band!

So what does your child need in order to do band and where can you find it??

So your child wants to be in band, but how do you get your child an instrument?

Instruments that your child may study in band are flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, French horn, trombone, baritone, or percussion. I would like to have all students have an instrument and a book by Monday, the 19th of September.

It is crucial that each student has a quality band instrument. An instrument must be in good working condition in order for a student to succeed. Because Lolo School has usually around 100 band students and owns a limited amount of instruments for our band program, I encourage students to provide their own instruments for band class if at all possible. There are a couple of music stores in Missoula that offer rent-to-buy plans, which means that the money you spend monthly on renting the instrument will go toward the purchase of the instrument unless you decide not to purchase the instrument, in which case you can cancel the rental at any point. I highly endorse this method of obtaining an instrument. Here are a couple of music stores in Missoula that offer instrument rentals:

If you are planning on utilizing an instrument you have already obtained, I recommend that you have the student bring that instrument into me or to a music store ahead of time. I would be happy to assess the condition of the instrument and make sure that it is in working condition and doesn’t require repair. If you are unable to rent or find an instrument I do have several instruments available here at the school, there is a yearly fee of $35 for these instruments, it needs to be paid to the office before your child may use the school instrument. Any child who is interested in band should be able to participate so if you are concerned about being able to obtain an instrument because of finances or other reasons, please let me know about these concerns and I will do my best to help, we do have scholarship assistance for that. In addition to instruments, students in 5th grade will also need a book, the book is called Essential Elements Book 1 and can be found at either music store mentioned above. If your child is playing the clarinet or saxophone you will need to get them some reeds, reeds are not something they can share or borrow so they will need their own even if they are using a school instrument, they cannot play these instruments without reeds, they can be found at the above-listed music stores and are inexpensive. Students planning to be in the percussion section will just need a pair of drumsticks and, if possible, a practice pad. These can be found at either of the music stores mentioned above.
