Podcast with Verde Technologies
So what do we do about it?
A company called Verde Technologies has introduced a product called Deterra Drug Deactivation System. The pouch, which comes in several sizes, renders pills, liquids and patches ineffective for misuse and is environmentally friendly.
The company has two goals:
1) Fighting abuse and misuse of drugs
2) Reduce contamination of water and air
Learn how they accomplish those goals with Deterra Drug Deactivation System in this episode of the Wood County Prevention Coalition Podcast: http://www.podcastgarden.com/episode/deter-drug-deactivation-system_85892

Blog: Impact of E-cigs on Health
Matthew L. Myers, President of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids
Electronic cigarettes could benefit public health if:
- they are properly regulated;
- found to be effective at helping smokers quit completely; and
- are responsibly marketed to adult smokers.
In any event, they are not safe, especially for kids. Kids should not use any tobacco products, including e-cigarettes. Unfortunately, youth use of e-cigarettes in the United States has skyrocketed in recent years. The CDC’s latest survey showed that almost one-quarter of all high school students were current (past-month) users of e-cigarettes in 2015, compared to 10.8 percent who smoked regular cigarettes. That trend is not surprising as e-cigarettes have been irresponsibly marketed using tactics long used to promote regular cigarettes to kids and are sold in an assortment of kid-friendly flavors such as gummy bear and cotton candy.

Accidental overdoses Killed 8 people a day in Ohio last year
Associated Press 8/25/16 COLUMBUS, OHIO
Accidental drug overdoses killed 3,050 people in Ohio last year, an average of eight per day, as deaths blamed on the powerful painkiller fentanyl again rose sharply and pushed the total overdose fatalities to a record high, the state reported Thursday.
Over one-third of those deaths — 1,155 — were fentanyl-related, which more than doubled from the previous year and increased from just 75 in 2012.
Authorities who had been targeting prescription painkiller abuse say the problem has changed quickly in recent years as users turned to heroin, fentanyl and even stronger drugs.
It's an epidemic that can only be effectively addressed through cooperation and a combination of prevention, early intervention, up-to-date treatment, and life-saving measures such as the opioid overdose antidote naloxone, said Dr. Mark Hurst, the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services' medical director.
"This isn't an issue that, as state departments and agencies, we're going to be able to solve unilaterally,"
