Spiritual Reflection
Miss Sheila O'Callaghan
Lent is the most famous of the church seasons. Eastertime is more important, but people seem to know the most about Lent. Lent will take us from the end of winter through to the beginning of spring.
Talking about spring, just look around you and there are signs of spring everywhere. The little snowdrop raised its delicate head about three weeks ago. It gives us the idea that we can be strong just like this delicate little flower. There are other flowers such as the crocus, daffodil and tulip plant that are on their way also. Just think, God is giving us all this beauty so we will be happy and also to help us to be strong and continue to make our Lenten sacrifices.
As we continue our journey through Lent we cannot forget the many saints we will remember and celebrate.
On March 7, we remember Ss. Perpetua and Felicity, Martyrs. They were brave African women. In the year 203, they were arrested for being Christians. All the captured Christians were later taken into sports arenas where they were killed. The bravery of the women amazed everyone and their story was written down. It is one of the oldest stories of our early saints.
St. John of God, Religious, is remembered on March 8. John was born in Spain. He ran away from home at the age of eight and joined the army. Later he became a shepherd and then a bookseller. Finally, John turned to his loving God and spent the rest of his life caring for sick people who had no place to live. The life of St. John of God is unusual. It reminds us that Jesus has a work of love for each of us.
March 9, is the day we remember Saint Frances of Rome. She had a very good husband and three children. She became very sad when two of her children died. Frances gave her sorrow to God in prayer. For the rest of her life she cared for the poor in the worst areas of Rome. She brought them food and firewood. Other women joined her in this good work. Some of those women became sisters. They were some of the first sisters who went into the homes of the poor and sick.
Please pray for the sick, especially Father Mink, Father Jasper’s mom, Patrick Flanagan, and all the sick of our parish. Our Armed Forces and First Responders need our prayers. Please pray for them.
Sharing our Faith This Lenten Season
