Coldstream Update
September 21, 2020
Wrapping up September in Style
Hello families. Thank you for everyone's support and patience as we navigated our new school way this September. We are very thankful for the wonderful community of Coldstream. The students are happy to be back, seeing their friends and learning in their new classrooms. We can now look forward and ahead to the many classroom learning opportunities and school activities that make this such a great place to learn. This news has some celebrations and sharing for you and some information about some activities happening over the next weeks.
Terry Fox Run - Friday, September 25th
This Friday, our classes will participate in our school Terry Fox Run. Rather than the whole school run, each outdoor group (2 classes) will do their run throughout the day. This year marks the 40th year of the Terry Fox Run and we will be sharing the history and importance of Terry Fox and the legacy he has left us.
For fundraising, we are going to go with the online option. Families interested in contributing can connect to our Coldstream fundraising page at this site with the Terry Fox Foundation.
Orange Shirt Day - Wed. Sept. 30
Join us at Coldstream for Orange Shirt Day. Students and staff will be wearing their orange shirts to show their support for families and survivors of the residential schools. Classes will be having age appropriate conversations about the importance of this support.
Orange Shirt Day is a legacy of the St. Joseph Mission (SJM) residential school commemoration event held in Williams Lake, BC, Canada, in the spring of 2013. It grew out of the story of Phyllis Jack-Webstad and of having her shiny new orange shirt taken away on her first day of school at the Mission. This story has become a symbol for the losses and it has become an opportunity to keep the discussion on all aspects of residential schools happening annually. The date was chosen because it is the time of year in which children were taken from their homes to residential schools, and because it is an opportunity to set the stage for safe, inclusive classrooms and schools for the coming school year. The history of residential schools is now embedded in our BC Curriculum and this day provides one opportunity for the conversations to begin. If you’d like more information about Orange Shirt Day, you can check it out online at http://www.orangeshirtday.org/.Picture Day is Monday, October 5th
Monday, October 5th is individual student picture day at Coldstream. Mountainwest studios will be here to take all student photos. They have updated their processes to have a safe and efficient system for photos that matches all of our school district protocols for safety. Bring your smiles everyone!
