From Mr. Clemente
Dear Winter Park Band families,
Happy New Year! I hope all the families of our Band community had a safe and relaxing holiday break. I am excited to see everyone again on Wednesday and to get back to doing what we love - being together and making music!
Don't forget to make plans to bring your instrument and folder back to school tomorrow morning! If you have a large instrument and will be dropping it off at the Band room before school Wednesday, Mr. Smith and I will have everything unlocked and open by 6:50 AM. All classes will be right back to our routines Wednesday, and you need your instrument so we can hear your sound contributing to the ensemble!
All students should be squared away with an accompanist for Solo & Ensemble if you are performing a solo that requires accompaniment. Anyone who is performing in an ensemble should have a schedule of rehearsals set with your fellow ensemble members to be sure you are prepared to perform in early February. We will be discussing S&E frequently in class over the coming weeks, and everyone must have a copy of their S&E music with them daily in their Band folder. Please do not hesitate to ask Mr. Smith and me questions concerning preparation for S&E - the earlier you ask, the more we can help!
The Pit Orchestra for Sweeney Todd will have rehearsals this week on Tuesday, January 3 from 1 - 4 PM and Thursday, January 5 from 2:45 - 5 PM. I'm excited for our show to go up two weeks from Thursday!
Winter Guard also hits the ground running again as they prepare for FFCC Premiere in a couple weeks. We can't wait to see your 2023 show come to life!
Welcome back, and looking forward to an exciting second semester!
Mr. Clemente

From the Band Booster President, Mrs. Dana Adkinson
Happy New Year!
As we begin the new year, a couple things that need your attention right away:
- Now begins the crunch to prep for Door-to-Door, the year’s biggest fundraiser for the band! Please see Robyn Fodor's message below in this newsletter for specific info on that. We do need 22 (yes, 22!) more volunteers for our February 4th day of door to door-ing. Even if your child insists that you don’t enter his or her world, this is the ONE time to ignore that plea. The success of our Door to Door fundraiser is directly proportionate to the number of bodies that work that fundraiser on that day .. the more feet we have walking door to door (driven in cars by fabulous parents!), the greater the funds raised. You just have to drive a car full of sweet band kids around .. super easy! Contact Heather to submit copies of your driver’s license and car insurance info and with any questions (ribaric.family@gmail.com).
- If you have contacts with large-scale donors, corporations or foundations that may be able to assist with underwriting even a small portion of our Carnegie Hall trip, please contact Heather Ribaric, me or the directors with that information.

DOOR-2-DOOR DRIVER SIGN UP AVAILABLE
Door 2 Door - our biggest and most important fundraiser of the year is coming Saturday, February 4th, and the day will arrive faster than we’d all like to think! To make this fundraiser possible, we need parent drivers!
How does it work?
Each parent is given a carefully crafted map to drive, based on previous years results. We try to keep you close to your home, if possible. Each driver takes 4 kiddos in their uniforms to walk the part of the neighborhood on your map and collect money door-to-door. The students split up into groups of two and each group takes a side of the street. You are able to stay in your car and move along with them or get out and walk. You and your group return for lunch and to change groups with a new map for the afternoon.
This is a tradition for the Sound of the Wildcats and many neighbors expect our arrival, as we do it the same Saturday every year. We also have special permission from the City of Winter Park, so our kids are safe.
For all students, the fundraiser puts money directly into their band accounts! For any parents that sign up to drive, your child will receive an additional portion of the proceeds that will go directly into their account.
What you need to do:
For every driver that signs up I need 3 things:
1. Copy of driver's license
2. Copy of insurance card that will be valid at time of D2D. If it’s renewing between now and February, wait to send me the updated info, but send me an email letting me know that.
3. A screenshot of your active/approved Additions status.
It may seem like there’s plenty of time, but I need to have this information collected over Winter Break and we will all be so busy with the holidays, it’s helpful if you can sign up now and send me the info as soon as possible. Heather Ribaric, our map organizer extraordinaire, will begin doing her magic with all those maps by the first week of January.

Here is the Sign-Up Genius Link:

If you're signed up on Additions, but not finding that Additions page you need for your screenshot, here is the link and instructions to find your status:
https://ocps.samaritan.com/custom/503/volunteer_home
1. sign in (yep- you've got to remember that login info!)
2. If you do this on your computer, your picture and active status will pop right up. Take a picture and send that to me.
3. If you do this on your phone: once you sign In, it will say, "Welcome (your name)", scroll down to the bottom of the page where it says "more" and click on that. The next screen should show your picture and say "active". That's the page I need a screenshot of.
And I also need the driver's license and insurance card showing a date that's valid at the time of D2D in February
Remember, please only sign up if you are able to drive, however, we certainly understand sometimes there are unforeseen circumstances. We will be driving four kids for each car.
Please note that the sign ups are from 8-5. The sign ups are created like that because accommodating 1/2 day is very challenging to schedule. If you are unable to do all day, but can do 1/2 day, please let us know. We will put you on hold and see what our need is closer to February.
Warm regards,
Robyn Fodor

SOLO & ENSEMBLE MPA - Moving Into Winter Break
WHAT'S NEXT
Students now have selected their pieces, formed their ensembles, and should be setting about preparing for February's performance at Solo & Ensemble. If a student chooses to play a solo, they are responsible for providing a piano accompanist. If you are in search of an accompanist, please consult this list of piano accompanists on the Band website. Students who have not secured an accompanist need to see Mr. Clemente and Mr. Smith immediately after break.
Band students have two performance options to complete the Solo and Ensemble project:
- Option 1: Solo and Ensemble MPA. Solo and Ensemble MPA takes place each year at the beginning of February and is hosted by a school in our district, this year Horizon HS on February 10 and 11. This event is put on by the Florida Bandmasters Association(FBA), and allows students to perform for an adjudicator for a rating. Adjudicators for this event are professors, teachers, and performers from across the state of Florida, and students have the opportunity to receive feedback on their performance from someone who is an expert on their instrument. Students perform either a solo or chamber ensemble piece from the FBA Solo and Ensemble Required Music List, and may perform in up to 4 different events. The Band program pays for the event registration for all participating students.
- Option 2: Solo and Ensemble Recital Option. For students who choose not to perform at the Solo and Ensemble MPA put on by FBA, those students will perform as part of our Solo and Ensemble Recital at school. This year, that recital will take place in the Band Room on Wednesday, February 5, beginning at 1:30 PM. Students must select a piece from the FBA Solo and Ensemble Required Music List, and the performances will be adjudicated by both Mr. Smith and Mr. Clemente. Ms. Young would adjudicate color guard solos.
