Arcado's Annual Athletic Shoe collection will take place Thursday, November 6 - Thursday, November 12.
Simply place your gently-used and worn-out athletic shoes into the large collection boxes in the main lobby during those dates. Ecosneakers, a charitable organization, will be collecting our sneakers/tennis shoes for reuse and recycling. Some shoes will be redistributed to people in need in the Atlanta community and in countries all over the world. Those shoes that cannot be reused will be recycled into athletic surfaces and playground mulch. Unfortunately, we are not able to accept dress shoes, sandals, flip-flops, crocs, boots, or sports spikes (including rubber cleats). Thank you for saving used shoes from landfills and helping to fight the devastating impact of poverty!
It's Mrs. Fran Cone's 20th year at Arcado Elementary!
What have been your various roles at Arcado?
Gifted Program Teacher from 1995 - 2009
Media Specialist from 2009 - 2014
And back to Gifted Program Teacher since Dec. 1, 2014!
Who or what inspired you to become a teacher?
I came from a family of educators. My Mother was a teacher and then a principal. She was an educator for over 40 years, and both of my sisters were teachers as well.
If you were not an educator, what would you be? If I were not an educator I would be doing something in the creative field; most likely interior design.

What is Trick or Treat for Tumornators ?
Trick or Treat for Tumornators is a perfect picture of making lemonade with the most amazing group of teachers and friends, when life gives you lemons. In 2009 when my youngest son Drew was suffering mightily with the effects of NF, Allison Kennedy, Sally Duerr and few other Arcado staff members came up with the idea. The name "Tumornators" was my sons' idea meshing the terminating of tumors into one word.
What is NF and for parents new to Arcado, can you share a bit of your youngest son's story? NF is a genetic disorder that causes tumors to grown on nerves throughout the body. My son Drew's was the most rare type. After a seemingly normal childhood, he began to get a lump or two around the time he was ten years old. Right before his 16th birthday we discovered he had NF. He endured more than 28 surgeries to lessen the size or remove tumors that grew on nerves throughout his body. He passed away this August at age 28.
I was grieving so for the pain my son was in, and so my teacher buddies said "Let's do something to raise money for a cure!".
Trick or Treat for Tumornators is a chance for kids to have fun trick or treating, enjoy a variety of games, have their picture made with Tumi our Tumornators mascot panda, and Clifford the Big Red Dog. This year we have added some new attractions; a petting zoo, a dunk tank, painting rocks for a "Drew Garden" in the outdoor classroom, and an old fashioned Cake Walk! Most things are covered with the $5.00 per child registration fee. Breakfast items, raffle tickets and Cake Walk tickets must be purchased for a minimal additional cost. All the money we raise goes to fund research for a cure for NF! Like I said making lemonade with what could've been just lemons. I am blessed beyond measure to be at such a caring and hard working school!
If unable to attend, and you'd like to make a donation, make checks payable to Cupid Charities (100% tax deductible)
in the Memo portion put Tumornators. Checks can be dropped off in the Media Center with Mrs. Drescher or given to the office if it's in an envelope with my name on it.
