Local News Update
Round Table - Feb. 7th at 7:00 PM @ the Weatherford LDS Church on Bethel Rd
From the District Chair
Things are definitely beginning to pick up in the Brazos Valley District.
As this newsletter goes to print, the Joint Pinewood Derby Race with Santa Fe District will be in the history books. Thanks to Bruce and the host of volunteers that made this a huge success.
Family Friends of Scouting (FFOS) is underway. Reminder that units need to work with Kyle Johnson on getting their date set as well as whether they need an external presenter or not.
Camp Cards: Unit sign up due to Council by Feb 15 with the Camp Card sale campaign running March 1 through May 1. Final money or unsold cards due to Council no later than May 4. We will have a card this year with businesses represented from the Brazos Valley District area.
District Award of Merit – We need to get nominations in to the committee being chaired by Bruce Lustenhouwer.
We need to stay on top of Service Hours and Advancement. Units, PLEASE ensure your service hours are recorded as soon after the event is completed as possible. And we need to ensure that we are immediately recognizing our Scouts fr completing advancement work. We owe them that recognition and that goes from Tiger Cub through Eagle Scout. Each advancement is important!!!!
Order of the Arrow election forms were passed out at the January RoundTable. Troops, please don’t let this opportunity pass!!!!
We are in initial planning stages of a District wide Service Project(s). Some ideas we are looking at include: Clean up the Brazos, help TXDOT complete some of their projects. Please send ideas to my attention as I would like to close on one or 2 events by March timeframe.
Developing Personal Responsibility
One of the strong points of emphasis of our program has to do with each of us developing a strong sense of personal responsibility. What do we mean by that?
Some typical responses are, "When we say we'll do it, it's as good as done."; "Dependability", “You can count on me!”
Those are great answers. But the best way to Develop Personal Responsibility is through our actions, not our words. For instance, when you are given a job or chore, you will see it through.
Just how do we develop personal responsibility? How does it happen? Do you know some people upon whom you can always depend when they say they'll do a job? And do you know some other people you can never depend on - people who are always pretty likely to let you down. I am sure that practically all of us know people of both kinds. You have people classified. And I suppose people classify us in one group or the other, too.
I personally want people to know that I am a dependable person. And I am sure that is what you want also.
Let’s go out and put action to our words and DO what we say we will do! AS we do this, we will be developing personal responsibility.
Semper Fidelis!

Camp Cards
The Camp Card sale will run from March 1, 2019 through May 1, 2019 and is designed to be risk-free. NINE weekends for those that prefer to do Show N Sell at local retailers. This is a great program to help the youth and families within your unit to Pay their own way; to fulfill the Scouting promise of adventure and fun; earn a 50% cash profit on every sale that can be used at your Unit's discretion towards Scout activities & camping events. Unsold cards can be returned with no penalty (if returned on time).
We will have several store front shift options for your choice. BUT don’t rely just on what we’ve arrange. Schedule a shift where you know people frequent in your community. Many folks report an average of 10 to 15 cards sold per hour of Shift. That way you can judge how may shifts you need by the number of youth who are selling and what their goal is. And, as you know, the customer typically wants to help Scouts out. Couldn't be easier or more profitable, right?
Please designate a person in your unit to handle the campaign. Duties include:
- Think about how many cards your unit will need to sell per youth. Sign-up is now available on the Council website. Please see attached website link information. Notify me if you need to know what the unit sold last year.
- Simply go to https://www.longhorncouncil.org/home/unit-fundraising/camp-cards/ to sign-up online or return written commitment form by February 15th, 2019 to Kathy via email or fax to let us know how many cards you wish to sell.
- Attend March Roundtable to pick up Camp Cards or make arrangements with District Camp Card Advisor. (See names below)
- Unsold cards can be returned with no penalty (if returned on time).
- Organize sales events at Council’s designated locations (if you wish), and / or encourage the Scouts to sell on their own.
- Return and Pay: 50% of sales dollars to be returned to the Council by May 4th, 2019. Late returns will result into penalties. 50% by May 4th; 40% on/after May 5th; 20% June 1 and afterwards.
- Unsold cards can be returned at the Roundtable in May, just as long as, it is scheduled before the deadline. Please make arrangements with Camp Card Coach, Kathy, or myself if District Rountable falls after May 4th, 2019.
- If your unit will not be participating in the Camp Card campaign please let me know ASAP.
The commitment form can be found in the attached Leaders Guide and emailed to Kathy.McLean@scouting.org. You can also review The Leaders Guide and complete an electronic commitment form on the Council website athttps://www.longhorncouncil.org/home/unit-fundraising/camp-cards/ and your information will go directly to Kathy.
Additional fundraiser information can be found online at https://www.longhorncouncil.org/home/unit-fundraising/.
Monna Clayton is our DE for this project and LouAnn Hernandez is our district chair for Camp Cards.
