Important Facts

According to the National Children's Oral Health Foundation, tooth decay is the #1 chronic childhood illness and when left untreated, it can have devistating consequences.
  • Pediatric dental disease is 5 times more common than asthma and 7 times more common than hay fever.
  • Left untreated, pediatric dental disease can lead to malnourishment, bacterial infections, required emergency surgery and even death.
  • Pain and infection caused by tooth decay can lead to problems in eating, speaking and learning.
  • Dental disease has been linked to heart disease, stroke, diabetes, pneumonia, poor pregnancy outcomes and dementia.

Keeping Your Childs Teeth Healthy

  • Don't put your child to sleep with a bottle filled with milk, juice or a sugary beverage
  • Limit the sugary beverages between meals to two a day
  • Limit candy and sweets
  • Don't share utensils and straws if you have cavities so don't share cavity causing bacteria

  • Do use water in bottles before naps or bedtime
  • Have your child's teeth brushed twice daily (morning and before bed)
  • Model good behavior by brushing with your child
  • Provide healthy snacks instead sugary treats
  • Make brushing teeth fun- try using a nursery ryhme to encourage and teach kids the importance of brushing.
