Walled Lake's 2019-2020 School Year Calendar

Winter Sing Along and Celebrations

We will hold our annual Winter Sing Along on Friday, December 21st at 2:30 PM in the cafeteria.


Classroom celebrations will follow until the end of the day.


This is also the final day of school before winter vacation.

8th Grade Band and Strings Concert

The 8th graders from CHS will be here at Dublin on Thursday, December 20th to perform a concert for our fourth and fifth grade students. The concert will take place in our gym from 10:40-11:10 AM.

Fifth Grade Spelling Bee

Our fifth graders will be participating in our School Spelling Bee on Thursday, December 20th from 2:30-3:30 PM in the cafeteria.


Our fourth graders are invited to attend this event as our audience and parents of participants are welcome to attend too. Good luck fifth graders!

Hungry Howie's Pizza Fundraiser Days

We are once again working with Hungry Howie's to raise funds for our school.

Walled Lake Schools Community-Wide Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration

The 20th annual Walled Lake Schools community-wide Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration is planned for Monday, January 21, 2019, from 5:00 - 7:30 p.m., at Walled Lake Northern High School.


The celebration will begin with a multicultural dinner from 5:00-6:00 p.m. with food from a wide variety of ethnic restaurants. During the dinner, participants will visit student displays from each of our 19 schools, focusing on our theme, “Heroes in the Community: Women Making a Difference.” WLCSD’s Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration is made possible thanks to generous donations from the PTA/PTSA groups from across our district, the Walled Lake Education Association, the Walled Lake School Administrators Association, the Walled Lake Schools Federal Credit Union, and the Meemic Insurance Company.


From 6:15 - 7:30 p.m. there will be a program in the auditorium, featuring keynote speaker, Dr. Sylvia Hollifield, an MSU program Coordinator for elementary and secondary student teachers in the Detroit area. Dr. Hollifield will speak about this year’s theme, “Heroes in the Community: Women Making a Difference.” Several student choirs will perform, students will present their “Express Yourself” projects, and the Walled Lake Schools Alec Bender Friend of Diversity Awards will be presented.


Everyone in the community is invited to the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration. This program, including dinner, is free.

Pet Supply Drive

Our Girl Scouts are holding a Pet Supply Drive now through December 21st. They are collecting new pet items such as treats, food, and toys. These items will be given to a local animal shelter.


You may send these items in with your child or drop them off here in our office. We have collection bins in our office.

Winter Community Education Offerings at Dublin

Have you registered your child for any of our terrific after-school classes through Community Education?

We have made some changes to our After-School programming that we would like to make you aware of. In an effort to provide quality classes and overall management of our after-school programs, we have divided our offerings at the twelve elementary schools into “seasons” – fall, winter and spring.


Dublin Elementary will ONLY have after-school classes in the winter. Students are only allowed to attend after-school classes at their home school.


Our interactive, ONLINE FLYERS make registration a breeze.

You can register directly from your smartphone, tablet or computer.

ALL credit card registrations MUST be processed online. We can no longer accept CREDIT CARD payments by mail, fax, over the phone or walk-in/drop-off.


A non-refundable service fee of 3.49% will be applied to all credit card transactions per district guidelines. As always, we will accept cash, check or a money order made payable to WLCSD. A blank registration form can be printed from our website.

Winter Vacation

Our final day of school before the winter vacation will be Friday, December 21, 2018. Our school will be closed from December 22nd through January 2nd.


School will resume on Thursday, January 3, 2019.

In-District Transfer Request Information

If you would like your child to attend a school other than the one that is assigned to your address for the 2019-2020 school year, you must submit a Student Transfer Request application.


The Student Transfer Request Application period is Thursday, January 3, 2019, to Friday, January 18, 2019.


Requests must be submitted during the application period. Requests will be processed and notification of approval or denial will be sent via email, or U.S. Mail, approximately the first week of March 2019.

Schools of Choice Information

Walled Lake Consolidated Schools is a participant in Schools of Choice 105 on a ‘limited’ basis, limited meaning not all buildings and grade levels will have openings. Typically we accept applications for grades K-10.


Under Schools of Choice we may enroll 105 students who are not residents of our district but still reside in one of the other 27 Oakland County school districts who meet the application guidelines.


The application period for the 2019-2020 school is Jan. 14 - Feb. 1, 2019.

By law, applications cannot be accepted after February 1, 2019.

Fifth Grade Camp Open House

Parents and students are welcome to tour the Walled Lake Outdoor Education Center at 3577 Sleeth Ct., Commerce Twp., MI 48382, prior to their overnight camp experience.


This is a chance for you to take an informal tour any time between 5:00 and 7:00 pm on Wednesday, February 6, 2019.


The fifth graders at Dublin will attend the WL Outdoor Education Center for camp on Wednesday, March 27th through Friday, March 29th.


A camp meeting will be held at Dublin before our camping experience sometime in February. Information will be given to you about this meeting. This will be your chance to ask specific questions and get all of the necessary paperwork.

Winter Clothing Reminders

Colder temperatures have arrived! We want all children to feel comfortable and enjoy being outside so we ask that you please send your student to school with all of the winter gear they may need including warm coats, hats, gloves, boots, and snow pants.


Please label everything with your child's name in the event that their items become separated from them during the school day.


See guidelines below and be sure to discuss your expectations with your student(s):


  • We go outside unless it is below zero degrees (windchill)
  • Boots & Snow pants are required for students to play off the blacktop. We don't call home for dry clothes. This is their best protection.
  • Anytime it is 32 degrees and below, students are expected to wear hats/gloves/mittens. Above 32 degrees, we leave it up to your discretion, but do give reminders and encouragement.
  • If a student wears a coat to school, they will need to wear it to recess unless the temperature rises to over 50 degrees.

Updating Skyward Information

In an effort to make sure we have the most current and up-to-date information, we ask that all parents keep important information in Skyward updated.


This is very important as we enter the winter season. When there are snow days and other school cancellations, we need to make sure we are in contact with all families.


Please call our office to have our secretaries update your information if needed. Parents are unable to do this on their own in Skyward.

Two-Hour Delay Procedures

On rare occasions, morning conditions occur that temporarily prevent the District from safely transporting students or requiring students to wait at a bus stop or walk to school. These conditions typically involve thick fog, winter weather or utility problems and historically required cancellation of school for the entire day.


Beginning this year, Walled Lake Schools has developed a two-hour delay procedure that could be used if conditions are expected to improve within two hours. This procedure, which will be used sparingly, will permit students to get to school safely and allow the District to conduct a credited day of school.

Parents are encouraged to develop a plan so their children can safely stay home for an additional two hours in the morning and have them go to a trusted alternate location to await the delayed start of school.


In the rare event that a two-hour delay is activated, the following procedures will be followed:

  1. The District’s phone system will be used to notify all school families and staff members of the delay (by approximately 5 a.m. when possible)
  2. Local news and radio stations will be contacted to report the delayed start.
  3. If conditions do not improve within two hours, classes may be cancelled for the entire day and the same methods of notification will be made.
  4. All bus stop pick-ups will be delayed by exactly two hours (i.e. if your bus stop is normally 8:36 a.m., it will be at 10:36 a.m. on delayed start days).
  5. All schools will start exactly two hours later than normal (i.e. if your school normally starts at 8:57 a.m., it will start at 10:57 a.m. on delayed start days).
  6. Prime Time Care will open at its normal time (must be pre-registered to use Prime Time Care).
  7. Essential service staff (custodians, food service, maintenance, mechanics and warehouse) will report at their normal starting time.
  8. Professional, administrative and support staff shall report as soon as possible and no less than 30 minutes prior to the delayed start time of their school or worksite.
  9. Students shall report to the class they would normally be in at the time they arrive for a two-hour delay.
  10. Breakfast will be available for the duration of the delay and lunch will be served at the normal time.
  11. Schools will be dismissed at their normal times at the end of the school day.
  12. Staff will be released at their normal times at the end of the school day.

Supporting Your Child with iReady

Speak with your child about how using i-Ready will help him or her grow in school.

i-Ready shows where your child is doing well and where your child needs some more review. It helps teachers understand how to give your child the best support, and it lets your child see the gains they will make throughout the school year.


  • Help your child prepare for the Diagnostic by explaining that some questions on the Diagnostic test will be hard and that it’s okay not to know the answer to every question. Questions on the Diagnostic get a little harder each time a question is answered correctly, and a little easier when answered incorrectly. The goal is to figure out the math or reading level that is “just right” for your child, so your child should expect to see some questions that are too hard—and that’s okay! It means the test is working correctly.


  • Encourage your child to take each lesson and test question seriously.Emphasize “thinking before clicking,” because just clicking through answers will not give teachers an accurate picture of what is understood and what requires further instruction.


  • Help your child identify and become familiar with the different parts of the student dashboard. Log in to your child’s account with them and ask them to give you a “tour” of what they see.


  • Encourage your child to use the tools that will appear at the bottom of the screen in some lessons. Your child will sometimes see tools, like a calculator or dictionary, that will be helpful for completing an activity or answering a question on a quiz.


  • Discuss your child’s results by looking at “My Progress” together. First, look at the number of lessons shown as completed in i-Ready and celebrate that number with your child, who should feel good about this achievement alone. Then, take a look at the percentage of questions your child answered correctly in the quiz at the end of each lesson. In discussing these results, you might say


  • “Let’s look at how well you’ve been doing on your i-Ready lessons!”

    “What do you notice when you look at this data?”

    “Can you identify strengths from this report?”

    “What is something you feel like you are doing well?”

    “What areas are challenging to you?”

    “Let’s look at your data to see where and how we can work together to improve in those more challenging areas.”


  • If you are unsure about the expectations your child’s teacher has for the use of i-Ready at home, and which lessons your child should be completing, contact the teacher to clarify them.

Parent Advisory Committee (PAC)


What is the PAC?

PAC is a committee of parents whose children receive Special Education services. It's made up of parent volunteers from every school and program in the district. The group meets once a month with the Director of Special Services.


What do PAC Representatives Do?

  • Attend monthly PAC meetings to help plan events and help other families in the district navigate various issues relative to our Special Education community.
  • Ensure communication between schools, families, and Special Education staff.
  • Pass along Special Education information to other families and your school's PTA.
  • Publicize upcoming Special Services PAC events.
  • Donate their time and talent to help with various PAC events throughout the school year.


When does the PAC Meet?

Meetings are held once a month, typically in the evening. Everyone interested in supporting Special Services is welcome. Come as often as you can!

Voluntary School Accident Insurance

As a service to students and their families, our District is making available a student accident insurance plan for your child at a very nominal cost. The District offers this program because of trends in rising family health and dental insurance costs, increased deductibles, co-payments or lack of health or dental insurance coverage. Information can be found on the district website or by clicking HERE.
