Greetings Northstars,
I would like to share some updates and information on the topic of conference realignment.
To provide a brief history, seven years ago we sought realignment and we were unsuccessful. At the time the WIAA sought to make as few changes as possible to the current conferences. After that a moratorium was placed on conference realignment based on legitimate concerns that there was no clear process in place. A new process was put into place about one and a half years ago that follows a two year cycle. We observed the first round of applications to learn more about the process and to avoid making potential mistakes since nobody had ever done this before. We have learned a lot by watching schools like West Allis Central submit their application. Our intention is to submit our application in the Fall of 2022 based on the timeline provided by the WIAA.
There are several layers that complicate this for us. One is that our neighboring conferences do not have a clean and easy switch for us to make. The Greater Metro Conference is very similar to the Classic 8 and may not provide the relief we need. The Woodland Conference is comprised of smaller schools that would resist being placed in the Classic 8. We are exploring options with the Southeast Conference but with bus driver shortages the travel is a concern.
Another consideration is that not every sport benefits from realignment. Sports like golf, track, swim, hockey, gymnastics, cross country and others don’t follow the traditional dual schedule that soccer, football and basketball do and may lose out on some of the unique benefits that our current conference provides to them. Many of our coaches are willing to support each other and do what is best for the school but we do have to be conscious of how these decisions impact all families.
I have had the opportunity to sit down with a group of parents that are passionate about realignment and speak more in depth about the various aspects of this topic. I have attended several sessions with the athletic director’s association and the WIAA over this past year to explore any options available. I also serve on the WIAA Advisory Council to ensure I have a good working knowledge of the organization and can advocate for North. Most recently I have met with the AD from South and two schools in the Southeast Conference that may potentially want to switch spots with us in the Classic 8. That led to many conversations with our coaching staff to discuss the opportunities and challenges that switching conferences would bring to their individual sports. Per the WIAA process I brought that forward to the Classic 8 to officially announce our intention to seek realignment.
There is a lot of work to be done and no guarantee of the exact result that each individual involved in this would like to see. However, I do think it is important to try to do what is right for North and for the community to be aware of this process. The bulk of the detailed communication that I provide on this subject is facilitated with the Booster Club at their monthly meetings. I encourage any parents interested in supporting North Athletics to get involved and attend the meetings on the second Wednesday of each month.

Hello Northstars!
I would like to provide you with an update on your state and district assessments that we administer here at North High School.
The first state assessment that students will take in the New Year will be the ACT with Writing exam on March 8th, 2021 for our current Juniors. Planning has been underway for quite some time and you will begin to see communications from the school beginning in January that will provide important information about the test and its administration.
I would encourage you to have conversations with your students about the importance of doing well on the ACT as it is free to them and the scores can be sent to up to five colleges and universities. There are many options available to students to prepare for the exam, if you are interested in any of these please reach out to your students counselor and they can provide you with information.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Christina Kralik, Assistant Principal (E-M)
Hello Northstars!
I hope everyone had a wonderful winter break and are back into the swing of things!
When we return from winter break, all Waukesha School District 9th grades will be required to take the MAPS Reading and Math test. The Reading test will take place on the morning of Tuesday, January 4 and the Math test will be taken on Wednesday, January 5. This online assessment measures your child’s academic progress and is utilized by teachers to ensure best teaching practices. The information from this assessment will also be used as evidence to help determine programming decisions for your child, including extra support in Math and Reading in our intervention courses. Please be sure to remind your child to bring an iPad to school those days.
In addition, please take some time to talk with your child about how they are preparing for their course exams that are taking place January 19, 20, and 21. This is also a great opportunity for your child to utilize their academic planners to schedule time at home and here at school to study.
Students can take advantage of Just In Time Support (JIT) support Monday through Thursday from 7:20-7:50. Students can also attend JIT during lunch on Mondays from 11:45-12:05 and Tuesday through Thursday from 11:35-11:55. All students are welcome to attend JIT! JIT is the perfect time for your child to ask their teacher clarifying questions about an assignment, work with their peers to finish a final project, or to prepare for their exams!
Feel free to reach out to your child’s teacher if you ever have questions about their grades or academic progress. We appreciate your continued support as we work to ensure that all our students are successful here at North.
Good luck with your exams and have a great start to your second semester!

Library Catalog - Destiny Information
Did you know that you have the ability to search, hold and read books in our district libraries from anywhere, on any of your devices? Just have students use the app on their iPads called "Follett Destiny'' (the one with a tree) that takes them directly to the traditional catalog. Or the newer look is the Destiny Discover app (see image below). Both apps will accomplish the same task- just a different look. Click on "Catalog" to search for a book or another resource. If you would like to place a hold on a book, or read an electronic copy of the book, or to view your own account, you just need to be logged in first. You will see “Log in'' in the upper-right hand side of your screen. Use the same username and password that you use for your other accounts in the district. Username is a first part (before @) of your student’s SDW email account (first initial+last name+###@stu.waukesha.k12.wi.us). Password is lunch code+safe word.
Find some New Titles and place them on hold. We will deliver it to your English class.
Don’t have an English class we will then look to see what class we can bring the book to.
Here is how you see Recently Added Titles
