February 2020

Welcome to The Morris Minute!

This is the place to find updates for staff, parents, and families of Morris Elementary. Thank you for checking it out!

A Note from Mr. Anderson

Hello Morris Families!

As we recently celebrated the 100th Day of School, I couldn't help but think about how quickly this year is getting away from me! Conferences are in a few weeks, and then Spring Break will happen shortly after that. WOW!

Our students have been busy working hard at what it means and takes to be Bondurant's BEST! I did want to share that we have been taking the time to recognize those students at school-wide assemblies! That's right, ALL students in our building have been going to the new gym and listening to positive messages and examples of how students meet and exceed the BEST expectations. Students are then recognized by staff and peers for their hard work! It has been so fun seeing their expressions and having our awesome students praise each other for positive performances within our building. We certainly are working at being good friends for sure!

Another reminder (I know, I know.....) regarding weather. Please send all outdoor clothing necessary for this time of year with your students every day! We want them to enjoy play outside, but we also want them dressed appropriately to do so. As a parent that has had their child forget their "stuff", I know it can be hard. We just simply don't have the clothing available for this issue. Thank you so much for your help on this!

I am incredibly proud of our students and staff through the first 100 days of school. I look forward to the next 80! We will celebrating green grass and the ending of another quality year of learning before you know it. I also look forward to seeing you all at conferences the last week of February!

#MorrisJays Students Are Working for a Hot Chocolate Party!

At the beginning of January, the Morris Elementary PBIS Team took some time to analyze our office referral data for the year and set a school-wide behavior goal for all our students during the month of January. The goal reads:

Beginning on January 10th, 2020 and ending on January 30th, 2020, #MorrisJays Kindergarten-2nd grade students are working to decrease the number of major office referrals happening in the classroom by 10%. If we meet this goal, the PBIS team will host a school-wide hot chocolate party!!!

Teachers have shared this information with students and there are posters/visuals around the building to remind the students what we are working for! Feel free to discuss with your child at home what Bondurant's BEST behavior/choices look like in the classroom - your help/support is greatly appreciated!

These are just some of the over 100 amazing art pieces by Morris students that will be on display during the Bondurant-Farrar K-12 Art Show at the Ankeny Art Center

News from the Art Room

The Bondurant-Farrar K-12 Art Show at the Ankeny Art Center will run from February 4th -February 26th. This show highlights and honors the art work of students in our school district. Morris Elementary will be represented by over 100 talented artists in kindergarten through 2nd grade. The show is open to the general public during the hours of the Ankeny Art Center:

Tuesday-Friday: 9 am-1 pm
Thursday: 4 pm-7 pm
Saturday: 9 am-noon

There will be a small reception held for exhibiting artists on February 6th from 5-7pm. The show is an excellent opportunity to familiarize your student with the art gallery and celebrate our district’s talented visual artists.

All second graders will be exhibiting their favorite piece from the year during conferences at their Art Spectacular. Kindergarten and 1st graders will also have pieces displayed in our school hallway gallery. Stop by, view, and discuss some art today! To check out student art right from your own home, go to

Box Tops For Education

Box Tops made the switch to the app! A few products still have the actual Box Top on them, and if you have some of those, they are still accepting them until their expiration date, so keep clipping and sending them in! However, most new products now will just have the Box Tops logo and you'll need to have the Box Tops for Education app to give our library credit. It's a quick, simple process--I just did it myself to see! When you download the app, it'll ask what school you're collecting for. You'll need to type Anderson Elementary, whether your child attends Morris or Anderson, because our school account was set up before Morris existed. Anderson and Morris libraries split the proceeds equally each year. There are LOTS of Anderson Elementary Schools around the country, so be sure to find ours. When you've downloaded the app, you'll just need to scan your receipts each time you shop. It keeps a running tally of the money we've collected so far. Box Tops have made a huge impact on the number of books we get for our libraries each year, so your time and effort in getting the app and scanning receipts does make a difference. Thanks so much!

Traffic Patterns

Please be sure to familiarize yourself with the drop off and pick up map so you are aware which lot you will need to use. If you need a Color coded sign, please let Jen or your teacher know and we can send a sign home for you with your student.

A few notes from Ms. Jen

Well, I can't say I am sad to see this January end. We have seen SO much sickness here at Morris and it is never fun to have to send someone home when you know they just want to be here. It made for long days and we are all looking forward to everyone being healthy again soon!

So here is my broken record request of please email your child's teacher AND me when your student is going to be out - whether due to sickness or some fun plans - we need to know why they are not in school so we can get it recorded in the attendance system. I know when you are dealing with a sick child in the middle of the night, Ms. Jen and her attendance needs are the last thing on your mind - I've been there too. Just please let me know at your earliest convenience. I really do appreciate it!

February has a lot going on too, with a First Grade Field Trip on the 10th, Spring Parties on the 14th, Parent Teacher Conferences the last week, and a day off on Friday, February 28. Hope you find something fun and exciting to do on our extra Leap Day on the 29th too! It only happens once every four years - make the most of it. :) I also highly encourage you to attend the Bondurant-Farrar K-12 Art Show at the Ankeny Art Center (see info listed in the newsletter above) We have such wonderful art teachers in our district - it is a treat to see all of the wonderful things our students are creating, at all levels - even if your child doesn't have a piece on display, it is fun for them to find works their friends have created.

Here's hoping Mother Nature takes pity on us and we see lots of sunshine soon. Have a FANTASTIC February! - jen
