CLEVELAND SCHOOL OF THE ARTS
WEEKLY NEWSLETTER FOR UPDATES & REMINDERS
Week of November 14 - 18
A note from the Head of School
Hello CSA Community,
The cold weather and snow have finally arrived. Now more than ever it is urgent that we all work hard to ensure our scholars are making it to school on time. Chronic absenteeism is the leading cause of low high school graduation rates, not graduating on time and high school dropouts. Previously I mentioned that our chronic absenteeism rate was 55.6% from the previous school year. Our goal is 30% or lower for the current school year. With more student-based incentives, family engagement, and school-to-home communications, we will meet our goal.
Our full school ensemble, We Are One, is finally here. Your scholar(s) has helped to produce CSA's largest performance in nearly 20 years. In conjunction with CSA's 40th year anniversary, We Are One is a stage performance that answers one of life's most essential questions, "what does it take to embrace people who are not like me?". More than 100 of our scholars have worked incredibly hard to make this show a reality. I am extending an official invitation to our families and friends to join us for one of two nighttime shows.
- Friday, November 18th @ 7:00 pm
- Saturday, November 19th @ 7:00 pm (a special alumni production proceeds the main show)
All shows will be held at the John Hay High School Auditorium. Students who are not participating in the production will NOT attend the day show, rather they are invited to attend either of the evening family and friends showtimes.
This week we are introducing two new student engagement tools, IXL and Kickboard.
- IXL is a personalized learning platform used by over 400,000 teachers worldwide. It combines curriculum, a Continuous Diagnostic, individual guidance, and real-time analytics to help teachers differentiate instruction for each of their scholars.
- Kickboard is a behavior management and rewards system. Teachers are able to track and plan for scholar cultural needs more accurately.
How will they be used? Math and English teachers will use IXL as a supplement to their normal classroom instruction. Students in their classes will be provided with an individualized learning pathway designed to reinforce missed or weak skills. Once students have mastered key concepts the program will automatically adjust their levels. Students will be assigned up to 10 minutes of at-home IXL work in both Math and English each day.
Kickboard will be used in each classroom and by all faculty and staff. Each day, scholars will be rewarded for displaying the school norms, random acts of kindness, and overall behavior, attendance, and grades. They will also be marked for being late to class, cutting class, classroom disruptions, and also receiving detentions. Parents, you will receive your personal login credentials that will allow you to get real-time notifications on your scholar's daily cultural progress.
Join me on Tuesday, November 29th at 8:30 am for Coffee and Convo. You'll enjoy light refreshments while we chat about school improvement goals, projects, and grade-level-specific items. The coffee and convo event will be held monthly in the first-floor gallery. Use the link in the Family Engagement section to RSVP by November 22nd.
As a courtesy to our CSA families, we wanted to make you aware of the CSA Docuemenary project currently underway. The film will follow several students in different majors through the school year to provide viewers with insight into the process of CSA. So many people know what we do but not many people know how we do it. Many people say we have a beautiful school but they don't know what the inside looks like. This film will answer many questions that the public has about our school.
As a school of performing and creative arts, our goal is to help each individual perfect their craft and develop a love of art that propels them through life. We believe that art is one of humanity's greatest forms of communication and we plan to spread the message of love and unity throughout the City of Cleveland. #artisforever
