Reading and Writing
This week we took the Fall MAP reading test! I am so proud of how hard our students worked. They took their time and used all of the strategies they have learned over the years. These tests are long and require lots of concentration. Our 5th graders did great!
We continue to participate in book club conversations. Most of the kids are really enjoying their books and their discussions have been interesting. Feel free to ask them about their books and what they think the THEME of their book is.
We are almost finished with our Narrative Writing Unit. I can't wait for the kids to share what they wrote. We continue to work on making our writing better and better.
We had our first spelling test this week. New words were handed out and the packet of homework will be due on Thursday, 10/25.
Have a great weekend!
Math
This week we took the Fall MAP test! I'm proud of the hard work students put into this assessment.
Our study of fractions continued. We used benchmark fractions (0, 1/2, 1, etc.) to estimate our answers. This allowed students to see if their answers were reasonable. We finished the week with a quick quiz. This grade will not be posted in the grade book. I use this as a tool to assess student learning. You will see this quiz in next week's Friday Math Folders. Students will be having the Unit 1 Test next week. Please check the Canvas Calendar for the exact date.
If your child is struggling with math homework, please have them take a moment to look at our math videos on our webpage. We worked on recording videos that students can use as a resource, as they navigate through fractions this unit.
BizTown
All students—or citizens, as they are called in the program—have applied for and received jobs at JA BizTown. They have worked in their business teams, practicing the teamwork skills they explored in the previous unit. Teams spent time brainstorming the characteristics of good businesses and discussing “best practices” to help guide their efforts as they operate their own businesses at JA BizTown.
At JA BizTown, business teams will apply for a business loan to cover these costs initially. Then, employees will seek to pay off the loan before returning to school. Citizens learned that a promissory note is a promise to repay a loan within a certain time period.
