A few quick things about this week...
Reading
We have officially started our Book Clubs! Students will be responsible for reading assigned pages by specific dates, so at home reading may be necessary. For each of their assigned readings, students are responsible for bringing their post-its with questions to discuss. All Book Club books will be counting towards their independent reading goal this trimester!
DUE THURSDAY
- I am Malala - pgs. 36-65
- The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind - pgs. 36-97
DUE FRIDAY
- Farewell to Manzanar - pgs. 42-92
- Zlata's Diary - pgs. 32-57 (June 18, 1992)
*Please remind your child to be submitting their Reading Book Logs when finished an independent reading book! I want to make sure everyone gets credit towards their reading goal of 6 books per trimester!
Ask me about: How do characters change throughout novels?
What you can do: Have a conversation with your child about their independent reading. Book conversations can include:
- A summary of what your child is reading
- A conversation about their characters - a contrast & contradiction or an again and again, How is your character changing/growing in your book?, What are some of the character's strengths/weaknesses and why?
- A brief read aloud of their book.
- Ask if they have found any new "robust vocabulary" words to add to their bookmark.
ROBUST VOCABULARY ASSIGNMENT IS POSTED ON MICROSOFT TEAMS - DUE FRIDAY! Students will be working on this in class and all assignments must be submitted on TEAMS.
Writing
This week we will be preparing for sixth grade assessment and our research informative pieces on volcanoes. Students will be learning about the "presearch" process as we begin the research process prior to developing a written informative piece.
What you can do: Help your child generate ideas for future informative writing pieces and sixth grade assessment topics in their Writer's Notebook.
Spelling Unit 5 - pgs. 32-34 and 228 (Parts A, B, & C) due Thursday, Unit 5 Quiz Friday
Sixth Grade Assessment ~ Time to Start Thinking About Topics!
Science ~ Water Pollution
Students will have a quiz on Monday, January 13th, 2020.
This week we will be discussing streams, watershed, and wetlands. We will be identifying how water moves, what can affect watersheds, and how wetlands impact ecosystems.
