The Power of Friendship- By Mrs. Filauro Havel Social Worker
During this time of year, we often focus on things we are grateful for. Friendship is always a common theme discussed as things we are so thankful to have. As adults, we know the importance of friendships. We know the value of having people to spend time with, to laugh with and to cry with. For children, these relationships are just as important. Research shows having friendships has a positive impact on mental and physical health. For example, in preschool age children developing friendships helps to increase a sense of belonging, assists in building social skills, and decreases stress. Children with strong friendships typically demonstrate a higher self- esteem, frequently demonstrate socially appropriate behavior, and can better deal with the stressors of life. Parents can assist their children in developing positive friendships by:
*Modeling the importance of staying connected to others
*Model appropriate friendship skills
*Provide opportunities for children to spend time with peers
*Focusing on the quality of friendships vs quantity.
