10/14 OCC Fun Run!
We are participating in the OCC Fun Run on Friday, October 14th. It's a 5K run/walk. Students have been training during Fitness class. It's optional for students to participate, but we are encouraging it, since it's an opportunity to be around their college peers. We asking for donations; non-perishable items and personal grooming items. They will be donated at the event. Students that chose to stay back will follow their normal school schedule. Students that are participating will leave our building between 8:30-9:00 and return between 12:30-1:00. Please contact Chas if you any questions. chastitie.mitchell@wbsd.org

The Road to Independence: Taking Calculated Risks
Join our new director, Emily, on Monday, October 17th from 5:30 - 6:30 pm as she talks about the importance of taking calculated risks
on the road to independence.
This virtual session will cover what taking a risk can look like, how to rebound after a challenging experience, and how natural consequences can be a great teacher.

Independence Prep Enrollment Is Now Open!
After selling out the summer sessions of Independence Prep,
our overnight independent living experience for teens and young adults,
we've now opened enrollment for three 2022 - 2023 school year sessions.
If you're looking for a safe, supported and fun way to practice and grow
your independent living skills, join us for Independence Prep!
Enrollment for our first October session closes September 27th, so get your application in soon.
Independence College: Coming Very Soon!
On My Own is putting the finishing touches on Independence College, our new two-year residential college-like experience for young adults, and expect to open enrollment in November!

March into Transition
March into Transition is an opportunity for families to learn all about community agency supports available to 504, Resource Room, and Self-Contained students in our county. MANY of our students are missing out on these opportunities.
In addition, please share the MRS Information Night Flyer. MRS has an abundance of vocational and educational supports, especially for Resource Room & 504 students, ages 14 and up.

FLASH stands for Family Life and Sexual Health. It's a School Board approved curriculum that we got trained in to teach through Oakland Schools It covers the following;
Public and Private Behaviors, Reproduction, Self Esteem, Pregnancy, Gender Identification, Sexual Health, Families, Sexual Decision Making, Friendships and Dating, Birth Control, Helpers,Acquaintances and Strangers, Non Verbal Communication, Sexual Diseases,
Hearing and Saying No, Anatomy of the Body and Puberty.

Michigan Rehabilitation Services-MRS
Michigan Rehabilitation Services offers FREE vocational services for individuals with disabilities. If your student is more than 2 years from exiting public school, to begin services please fill out the MRS Pre-ETS Referral. Here is an MRS Pre-ETS Brochure to learn more about the services available. For students exiting school within 2 years or less, please email Renee.Samuels@wbsd.org giving permission for us to share your child's name and the best contact number for MRS to reach you.
