Important COVID Vaccine Information

GET VACCINATED FOR COVID-19

CDC recommends everyone ages 5 and older get a COVID-19 vaccine to help protect against COVID-19.

Looking for information about COVID-19 vaccines visit; https://www.vaccines.gov or Call 1-800-232-0233

Find a free COVID-19 vaccine near you CALL 1-800-232-0233 or TEXT your zip code to 438829. You will receive a text with places that offer vaccines and possibly a free ride to the vaccine clinic. The COVID-19 vaccine is FREE!

COVID-19 Vaccine Dosage and Administration for Children and Teens

  • Adolescents ages 12 years and older receive the same dosage of Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine as adults.

  • The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine for children ages 5 through 11 years has the same active ingredients as the vaccine given to adults and adolescents. However, children ages 5 through 11 years cannot get the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine given to adults and adolescents. In addition, children ages 5 through 11 years receive an age-appropriate dose that is one-third of the adult dose of Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine. Smaller needles, designed specifically for children, are also used for children ages 5 through 11 years.

  • Unlike many medications, COVID-19 vaccine dosage does not vary by patient weight but by age on the day of vaccination.

  • Your child will need a second shot of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine three weeks after their first shot.

Preparing Children and Teens for Vaccination

The experience of getting a COVID-19 vaccine will be very similar to the experience of getting routine vaccines.

· Talk to your child before vaccination about what to expect.

· It is NOT recommended you give pain relievers before vaccination to try to prevent side effects.

· Tell the doctor or nurse about any allergies your child may have.

To prevent fainting and injuries related to fainting, your child should be seated or lying down during vaccination and for 15 minutes after the vaccine is given. After your child’s COVID-19 vaccination, you will be asked to stay for 15–30 minutes so your child can be observed in case they have a severe allergic reaction and need immediate treatment.

After Your Child’s COVID-19 Vaccination

Your child may have some side effects, which are normal signs that their body is building protection.

On the arm where your child got the shot: Pain, Redness, Swelling

Throughout the body: Tiredness, Headache, Muscle pain, Chills, Fever, Nausea

These side effects may affect your child’s ability to do daily activities, but they should go away in a few days. Some people have no side effects and severe allergic reactions are rare. Ask your child’s healthcare provider for advice on using a non-aspirin pain reliever and other steps you can take at home after your child gets vaccinated. In general, aspirin is not recommended for use in children and adolescents less than 18 years of age. Placing a cool, damp cloth or ice pack on the injection site can help with discomfort. Once your child has received both vaccines make sure to get a copy to your school nurse and doctor.

For any more information and or questions feel free to call Nurse Sara at 317-226-4103.

Big picture

Please find updated information regarding masks and COVID from Nurse Sara below.

FROM NURSE SARA

Phalen Leadership Academies is very proactive in reassuring all masks are worn, and following all the guidelines from Marion County Health Department / Indiana Department of Health in providing direction to current situations as they arise. We are actively sanitizing and disinfecting all areas/spaces that could have been infected and lead to any further preventions. Moving forward, PLA families will receive a message any day a positive confirmation has been brought to the administration's attention which can impact all scholars.

Due to our scholars currently eating in the classrooms with masks off during meal time we will contact trace those scholars 6ft around the COVID-19 positive scholar. If your scholar has been identified as a close contact then they are required to quarantine for 10 days and will be given a return date by the school nurse. Scholars will be sent home with homework to be working on during time out of school and attendance will be excused.

Close Contact Tracing

An individual is a close contact if UNVACCINATED and meets one of the following:

● If anyone in the classroom is unmasked and individual is within 6 feet of a person who has tested positive for COVID-19 for a total of 15 minutes or more within a 24-hour period

● If all individuals are masked in the classroom, an individual is a close contact only if fewer than 3 feet from the person who tested positive for COVID-19 for a total of 15 minutes or more in a 24-hour period

● In all other areas of the school environment, any unvaccinated individuals within 6 feet of a person diagnosed with COVID-19 for a total of 15 minutes or more in a 24-hour period.

● Vaccinated close contacts do not have to quarantine but should monitor for symptoms, isolate and get tested if symptoms develop

If there was a positive COVID-19 case in the classroom those scholars are still considered close contacts, but DO NOT NEED to QUARANTINE unless contacted by our school nurse. We do ask that you PLEASE monitor your scholar for COVID-19 symptoms for the next 14 days. If symptoms develop you should immediately self-isolate the ENTIRE family and strongly encourage getting tested. Please call the nurse to discuss quarantine time and return date. If you have any questions or need more clarification please contact our school nurse.

Thank you for continuing to help keep our entire school safe.
