COVID Updates
- We will continue to test on Fridays. Remember that students that have tested positive will not need to test for 90 days. An updated list was placed in your box on Friday. Please follow the date in the last column that indicates when students can start testing again.
- All students and staff must wear a surgical mask. If you see that students have a cloth mask, please provide them with a surgical mask. Students can wear their both masks.
- If you need any PPE items such as hand sanitizer, surgical masks or disinfecting wipes, please email Angel at axp2917@lausd.net. He will deliver the items requested to your classroom.
- Close Contacts will not be sent home if any students test positive after we receive the results from this Friday's testing.
- Students that test positive will be sent home. They will need to quarantine for at least 5 days. If they are asymptomatic after five days, they can test with an antigen test. If the antigen test is negative, they may return to school. If the antigen test is positive, they will need to complete the ten-day quarantine. Students or staff will not need to test after the ten-day quarantine.
- Informational letter will be sent home to parents on Monday.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Reminders from our TSP Advisor-Juan Carrillo
Hello Malabar, this week our focus shifts to the new SPSA plan and budget for 2022/2023. We will begin meeting during our faculty meetings to discuss next year’s plan in order to come up with new objectives and new strategies. We have also been meeting with our Elac parents to get their input in the plan as well.
Also Mr. Melendez and I have been working on an intervention session for English learners. Please be on the lookout for an invitation as we will need approximately four teachers for the after school intervention session beginning sometime late February. Thank you Malabar and have a great week.
Updates from our Title III Coach-Ricardo Melendez
Designated Frame of Practice
How will you deliver lessons based Part II ELD Standards (Learning about How English Works) supported by Part I ELD Standards (Interacting in Meaningful Ways) this week?
- Designated Frame of Practice lessons can be found at https://achieve.lausd.net/Page/8773#spn-content under resources
- You can develop your own lesson (lesson template can be found in Malabar’s Google shared drive in the ELD folder)
- You can use Benchmark dELD and add a constructive conversation task about the language feature you are targeting.
Our English Learners need ample opportunities to able to develop an understanding of how English works. Please contact me if you would like to plan and co-teach a lesson.
Note: I will be conducting class observations during dELD to support your implementation of best practices, constructive conversations, and the Designated Frame of Practice.
2021-2022 SPSA Measurable Goal
By June 2022, English Learners scoring proficient (Overall Level 4) on ELPAC will increase from 7% to 30% as measured by the Summative ELPAC assessment.
News from our STEAM Coach-Angela Muro
Hello awesome colleagues,
We have made it through most of January. Your resiliency is amazing! As we continue with the uncertainty of this pandemic, don’t forget self-care. Like flight attendants tell us when we board a plane, “Put your oxygen mask on first before helping others.”
Teachers, did you know that we have new V. A. P. A. (Visual and Performing Arts) Standards? “Toto, I’ve a feeling we are not in Kansas anymore.” If you have not already looked at them, they’re very different from our previous standards. Here is a link to the California Arts Education Framework:
https://www.cde.ca.gov/ci/vp/cf/
I don’t want to preach to the choir, but many studies show that “the arts” can serve as an entry point for our student population. The Framework has a lot of information including resources. Here is a link to the chapter on media arts:
https://www.cde.ca.gov/ci/vp/cf/documents/artsfwmediaarts.docx
There are many ideas on how to incorporate multimedia in all academic areas including STEAM. We are currently working on PD for the new VAPA standards and how to connect art to our STEAM units. Understanding the new art standards is not going to happen overnight. In the meantime, here is a link to “STEAM-Art project” ideas:
https://www.steamsational.com/the-ultimate-list-of-steam-art-projects/
There is chromatography for 5th grade. I also, saw a “digital puppet” activity (in the Framework), maybe for 1st grades “Shadow and Light” unit. There are many art activities in the above link. Please check them out. As always, if you have any questions, shoot me an email or come by Room 5.
Reminders from our Intervention Coordinator-Vanessa Chavez
Let's spark the love for reading in our classrooms by having daily Read Alouds. One of the things I made sure to do daily for my students was Read Alouds. There were days when I wanted to skip because there was not enough time, but my students really looked forward to them. I would set aside 15-20 min. a day to give the students what they wanted and needed. I was motivated to keep reading to my students for 3 reasons:
I was probably the only person that read to them daily.
I modeled what reading should sound like
Most of the students started checking out books from the library based on the author of the read alouds.
Here are some benefits of Read Alouds:
Reading aloud creates a classroom community by establishing a known text that can be used as the basis for building on critical thinking skills that are related and unrelated to reading.
Discussions generated by reading aloud can be used to encourage listeners to construct meanings, connect ideas and experiences across texts, use their prior knowledge, and question unfamiliar words from the text.
Reading aloud gives students an opportunity to hear the instructor model fluency and expression in reading technical or literary language. “Through intonation, expression, and attention to punctuation, the reader demonstrates meaning embedded in the text.”
Reading aloud helps students learn how to use language to make sense of the world; it improves their information processing skills, vocabulary, and comprehension. Reading aloud targets the skills of audio learners. Research has shown that teachers who read aloud motivate students to read.

DIBELS 8 MOY DUE BY FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 4TH
100% COMPLETION IS OUR GOAL!!!
Hello Teachers,
This is just another friendly reminder……..
Our Professional Development for Tuesday, February 8th will be dedicated to analyzing DIBELS 8 MOY DATA. Therefore, all DIBELS 8 Assessments should be administered by Friday, February 4th. Keep in mind that DIBELS MAZE in grades 2-6 is done individually online by each student. At our P.D. on Tuesday, February 8th, we will focus on grouping our students to differentiate instruction in small groups and plan for lessons to meet those student needs. I am here to support! Please reach out to me for if you need help with testing.
Thank you for all that you do. You are very appreciated!
Williams Textbook Visit-Tuesday, February 8
We were notified this week that we have a planned Williams visit scheduled for Tuesday, February 8.
The purpose of the Williams Visit is to determine if all students have district approved instructional materials (physical or digital) issued to them for use in class and to take home.
The county office team may be required to visually and verbally verify sufficiency of instructional materials by any combination of the following procedures:
- · Students may be asked to place the instructional materials on top of their desks. (elementary)
· Students may be asked to raise their hands or verbally indicate possession and/or lack of assigned instructional material.
· Students may be asked to identify the specific instructional material assigned to them.
· Students will be asked if they can access instructional materials ( textbooks, electronic media or online courses) at home.
· The title, author, edition, publisher and copyright date of instructional materials will be matched against the District Instructional Materials list to ensure all materials are district approved.
· All courses/classes listed in RLA/ELD, mathematics, history/social science, science, and health education may be reviewed.
Please check with Ms. Tiffer if you are missing any textbooks. We will plan for a mock visit on Monday just to make sure that we are ready on Tuesday.
Parent Academic Workshops Tuesdays at 9:00 a.m.
Focus on Classroom Observations-Standard 3: Delivery of Instruction
As we visit classrooms, we will be focusing on the following two elements:
3b2. Discussion Techniques and Student Participation Techniques are used to ensure that all students share their thinking around challenging questionsEffective Practice: Teacher uses intentional, differentiated strategies to engage all students in discussion, attempting gradual release from teacher-directed to student initiated conversation. Students participate in intellectually challenging discussions.
3c1. Standards-Based Projects, Activities and Assignments Standards-aligned learning activities cognitively engage students in the lesson
Effective Practice: Instructional projects, activities and assignments are aligned to the instructional standards, require higher levels of thinking, are culturally relevant, and may include real-world application. Most students are cognitively engaged, constructing their own understanding and exploring content. The learning activities are differentiated, as necessary, to meet the learning needs of student subgroups.
During the month of February, I will be observing math and ELD instruction. The focus of the observation will be on opportunities for student discourse. I will schedule the observations based on your instructional schedules to ensure that I have enough time in the classroom to observe multiple opportunities for students to engage in discussion protocols.
