Shark FIN Bulletin

October Edition

Vision and Mission

Mission: All students at SCES will learn at high levels in a safe and supportive community.

Vision: The vision of our school family is to teach the whole child by providing high levels of instruction so they become productive citizens in our community.

Our students and staff work daily on showing SHARK STRONG behavior. Shark Strong means that our students are being kind, showing respect and having integrity. These are the three main character traits we continue to teach and reinforce at Sugar Creek Elementary.

Important School Information

Parent Conferences

It's that time of year where our teachers will be reaching out to set up parent/teacher conferences. We are offering face to face or virtual conferences to our parents. Please be sure to sign up for a time to meet with your child's teacher. This is a great way to hear the wonderful things your child is doing at SCES and areas we are supporting your student. This is a good time to ask questions or share the progress you are seeing in your child. Building positive relationships with our parents/guardians is the foundation to having a successful year!

Report Cards will be sent home on Tuesday, October 25th.

Nurse Schmaltz's News

As we are entering Cold, Flu and COVID season we are seeing an increase of sick students here in the Health Room.

As a friendly reminder…Please do NOT send your child to school if he/she has or has had:

· Fever more than 100 degrees within the last 24 hours (must be fever free without medication)

· Vomiting or Diarrhea within the last 24 hours

· Chills

· General malaise or feelings of fatigue, weakness or muscle aches

· Frequent congested ( wet) or croupy cough

To help prevent the spread of illnesses, re-enforce your child’s good hygiene habits:

· Wash hands frequently

· Do not touch eyes, nose or mouth

· Cover mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing

· Avoid close contact with others who are sick

Students need to be Healthy and feeling well in order to learn at their full potential.

New Tardy Policy

Please be aware that we have added a new tardy policy starting August 2022. Our school doors open at 7:05 and class begins at 7:35. Students who arrive after 7:35 will need to be signed in at the front office. Students will be allowed 3 unexcused tardies per quarter. After 3 unexcused tardies in a quarter, students will serve a lunch detention for each additional tardy. Each quarter, the process will start over.

Please do your best to get your student to school on time. It is vital to the student's learning to start school on time so they are prepared and ready to learn.

Transportation Changes

As a reminder, please communicate any transportation changes by 1:30 to your child's teacher and Casey Wright Please try and keep transportation for your child as consistent as possible.

Hispanic Heritage Month

This week we will be celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month at Sugar Creek! Each year from September 15th-October 15th, Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated around the world, and this week in particular we will be celebrating in a few different ways with our students. Our 5th grade Student Ambassadors put together a short video with fun facts and information on what Hispanic Heritage Month is. 26% of our school population is Hispanic and we love celebrating where our Shark family is from! Other small events this week will include Hispanic Heritage Month read alouds, short videos, and coloring! On Friday, we will be encouraging all Hispanic students to dress in their favorite cultural clothes that represent the countries that they and their families are from! All other students will be encouraged to pick colors from a Hispanic Heritage Month flag to dress in to help celebrate! We love sharing in our diversity at Sugar Creek and can’t wait to see who all we celebrate this week!

Guatemala Guest Teachers

We are excited to have two teachers from Guatemala at SCES! Both teachers are bilingual and teach in Guatamala. They are here to learn how schools work in the United States and learn a variety of teaching strategies to be able to present to their colleagues. One of our teachers is working closely with Mrs. Koppenhofer's 1st grade class and the other is working with Mrs. Norman's 4th grade class.

Fall Festival

We hope you will join us on Friday, October 21st from 5:00-7:00 for our Fall Festival! We will have carnival games, face painting, food trucks, raffles and more! Wrist bands will be able to be purchased for $10. More information coming soon on how to purchase wrist bands. Be on the look out for a flyer from PTO.

We will also have a pumpkin book characer contest at our Fall Festival- this is optional for our students. If you are interested, please turn your pumpkin book character into Mrs. Rickmon by October 18th.
