End of YEAR 2019-20
Well, yesterday was the last day of school for the 2019-20 school year! At this time of the year, I always spend some time reflecting on the year and this week has been extra special. I’m sure it’s been a true mix of emotions for many of us myself included!
Yesterday, we celebrated and honored our 8th graders and their successful completion of three years here at William Penn! It was an emotional and uplifting victory lap of the building and the campus as our 8th graders were driven by vehicle by their parents or guardians around the school.
Our staff cheered on our students and families as they drove past with music playing, horns honking, and balloons waving! After all that we’ve been through over the past three and half months, it was truly a memorable experience for all. From smiles to tears, and of course, laughs it brought a tremendous positive closure to one of the most challenging times that anyone of us has ever faced. Our school community certainly rose to the occasion and I am forever grateful.
I shared with our staff this morning that today was a celebration for our entire school community. Our perseverance, grit, and determination to rise to the occasion and put forth our best effort possible were truly inspirational.
My message to our 8th graders is simple and focused on the importance of having dreams, setting goals, and aiming high to achieve them. A quote that has importance for me has always been “I would rather attempt to do something great and fail, than to do nothing and succeed.” It was an awesome morning yesterday for our student body as we celebrated their growth and leadership over the past three years.
Finally, I can’t thank our community enough for their support throughout this school year as we’ve faced unexpected situations while also celebrating all of the positive things that occur throughout a given school year. From our teachers, our support staff, and to our custodial staff, everyone at William Penn is grateful for your continued support!
Although at this point in time there is some uncertainty as to what the start of next school year will look like, I am more than confident in our ability to meet this next challenge as a school TOGEHTER. Rest assured that we will communicate with you very frequently over the summer as more information is learned as we begin preparing for September.
I encourage you to check our district website regularly throughout the month of July and August. In addition, rest assured that we will reach out to you directly along the way.
We look forward with excitement and anticipation to the 2020-21 school year.
Enjoy the summer and the little things that make a big difference...Keep smiling...

2020 YEARBOOK ORDERS
Our Yearbooks are scheduled to be delivered at the end of JUNE. The yearbook production center was shut down for an extended period during our school closure which has delayed all orders for schools.
SAVE THE DATE
We are tentatively scheduling July 16 as yearbook retrieval day. This will obviously be dependent on our order arriving on time at the end of this month.
Additional information will be forthcoming regarding our procedures on that day.
Please be on the lookout for that information as we enter the month of July.

CELL PHONE REMINDER
We follow a simple saying and rule at William Penn regarding cell phones.
"Off and Away During the Day"
There are detailed expectations regarding cell phone use in the District's Code of Conduct on Pgs 9-11. At William Penn, we try to make these detailed expectations simple to remember and follow with our mantra "Off and Away During the Day."
At this point in the year, we have provided our students with multiple notices and reminders regarding the expectations of cell phone use during the instructional day. Because of this, future violations for students will lead to both disciplinary action (up to and including after school detentions) and the requirement of parents/guardians to pick up their child's cell phone from school at their earliest convenience. This also includes expectations for headphones during the school day during non-instructional time.
We recognize that many parents desire that their child have a phone for various reasons but we do not want to interrupt or distract the learning environment at school. Please do not call or text your child during the school day. If there is a need for your child to call home they are required to report to the office and use our student designated office phone. There has been a recent increase in situations where students and parents have texted each other during the school day. This has led to interruptions to the learning environment and confusion in our main office regarding arrangements being made between students and parents. We thank you in advance for your support regarding this matter.
News and Information:
We're on a roll so far this year with our Box Tops Program and have done so well that we've needed to reset our GOAL for the YEAR.
We encourage this free fundraising for our school opportunity for all parents! All that's necessary is for you to download the app, click a few buttons, shop, scan your receipt, and the rest is history!
Please clip and send in traditional Box Tops with your child’s name clearly marked. Use a baggie, envelope, or a collection sheet – whatever is easiest for you! Just send them in!! There is a bin in the front lobby where students can drop off the box tops.
Eventually, going forward, instead of clipping and checking expiration dates, all Box Tops will be earned digitally by scanning your receipt within 14 days of purchase. The new app will scan your receipt, find participating products, and instantly add Box Tops to our school’s earnings online. (Apple Link) (Android Link)
And while there are still traditional box tops that you can clip and collect for credit, you can scan your receipts for credit as well - earning 2x for our school. So please scan your receipts within 14 days of purchase and give credit to your child.
25 Book Challenge - The 25 Book Challenge is on! Each student who reads 12 books by the halfway mark of the school year (January 27) gets their name in the showcase and a small prize. Students are asked to show their language arts or English teacher their reading log in order to be recognized. If they read 25 books by the end of the year, they will be recognized once again and another small prize.
