UPCOMING NEWS & INFORMATION
We welcomed all of our students and staff back from a long winter’s break last week! I had a lot of conversations with students and staff about their time away and many of them had a similar response and theme...it felt really long! At any rate, it’s great to be back in the routine of school not only as principal but also as a father of two elementary school students!
This month marks the midway point of the school year as well as the annual time to reflect on how we’re going to make positive changes in our lives. I encourage you to have these conversations with your children and model a positive change yourself. I know in my own home we’re working on everything from getting our homework completed before sports practices to simply a few extra chores around the house!
As a reminder, our band and orchestra perform in their annual winter concerts next week on Monday, January 13 (Band) & Tuesday, January 14 (Orchestra). As we moved into their final rehearsals this week we look forward to another awesome performance by our talented students next week.
Check out the informational link listed below for opportunities to support our 14th Annual Black & White Winter Dance on Friday, January 24th! We had an unbelievable response from our school community fulfilling all of our needs for this event. Please consider another look if you haven’t done so already! It would be awesome if every single need was met for this annual event.
We also looked ahead and provided information about our state testing dates this school year. Fortunately, they are later than usual and might just be the latest that we’ve ever experienced. That being said, please be mindful of these dates if you are planning any family trips. It’s always a better experience for students when they can take the test at the same time with their peers and not in a make-up session after the fact.
Finally, during this time of the year sometimes winter weather may impact our school day resulting in dismissal changes or cancellations. Anytime that there is a change to the school day it will be communicated through our normal communication outlets which include the following: Blackboard Connect Phone Call-E-Mail-text, District Website, and local news outlets ABC, NBC, FOX, CBS. Typically decisions are made between 5:00-6:00 AM and typically are communicated around 5:30 AM. Our fingers will be crossed that this doesn’t happen too often this winter!

News and Information:
We're on a roll so far this year with our Box Tops Program and have done so well that we've needed to reset our GOAL for the YEAR.
We encourage this free fundraising for our school opportunity for all parents! All that's necessary is for you to download the app, click a few buttons, shop, scan your receipt, and the rest is history!
Please clip and send in traditional Box Tops with your child’s name clearly marked. Use a baggie, envelope, or a collection sheet – whatever is easiest for you! Just send them in!! There is a bin in the front lobby where students can drop off the box tops.
Eventually, going forward, instead of clipping and checking expiration dates, all Box Tops will be earned digitally by scanning your receipt within 14 days of purchase. The new app will scan your receipt, find participating products, and instantly add Box Tops to our school’s earnings online. (Apple Link) (Android Link)
And while there are still traditional box tops that you can clip and collect for credit, you can scan your receipts for credit as well - earning 2x for our school. So please scan your receipts within 14 days of purchase and give credit to your child.
25 Book Challenge - The 25 Book Challenge is on! Each student who reads 12 books by the halfway mark of the school year (January 27) gets their name in the showcase and a small prize. Students are asked to show their language arts or English teacher their reading log in order to be recognized. If they read 25 books by the end of the year, they will be recognized once again and another small prize.
Black & White Winter Dance
On behalf of the William Penn PTO, we are reaching out to seek support and donations for our Annual Black & White Winter Dance at William Penn Middle School. This annual event occurs later this month on Friday, January 24 from 7:00-9:00.
We are fortunate to have the opportunity to provide our students each year with this experience and it could not be possible without the support of our school community! Each year families have signed up to provide not only food donations but also to volunteer time for decorating and even cleaning up at the end of the night.
This dance transforms our main lobby into a formal banquet hall and our gym into a winter-themed dance floor. Students arrive in clothes that are more than their typical sweat pants that many students, including my own kids, wear each day! It's not out of the ordinary to see students in dresses or even shirts and ties. It's a positive, memorable, and fun experience for students, staff, and all of our families.
Please help us continue to make this experience positive and memorable for our students and consider helping to donate either some of your time or snacks for our students.
Please use the Sign-Up Genius link below to see what opportunities exist.
Tickets will go on sale for our students the week of January 21 in the lobby during student arrival.
Additional information will be provided regarding expectations and guidelines for our dance in the near future.

CELL PHONE REMINDER
We follow a simple saying and rule at William Penn regarding cell phones.
"Off and Away During the Day"
There are detailed expectations regarding cell phone use in the District's Code of Conduct on Pgs 9-11. At William Penn, we try to make these detailed expectations simple to remember and follow with our mantra "Off and Away During the Day."
At this point in the year, we have provided our students with multiple notices and reminders regarding the expectations of cell phone use during the instructional day. Because of this, future violations for students will lead to both disciplinary action and the requirement of parents/guardians to pick up their child's cell phone from school at their earliest convenience. This also includes expectations for headphones during the school day during non-instructional time.
We recognize that many parents desire that their child have a phone for various reasons but we do not want to interrupt or distract the learning environment at school. Please do not call or text your child during the school day. If there is a need for your child to call home they are required to report to the office and use our student designated office phone. There has been a recent increase in situations where students and parents have texted each other during the school day. This has led to interruptions to the learning environment and confusion in our main office regarding arrangements being made between students and parents. We thank you in advance for your support regarding this matter.
