UPCOMING NEWS & INFORMATION
So our infamous groundhog tells us that we should anticipate and early spring?! We will see! At any rate, he seems to be in the know as we continue to avoid the white stuff and move through what’s left of winter. The calendar tells us that there are only 30 some days before spring arrives and at this point, I’m more than ready for it.
I reach out to you this week with some typical news at this point in the school year but I also reach out with some out of the ordinary and fantastic news for us to celebrate as a school community! As everyone knows all schools in the Pennsbury School District went through a rigorous application process approximately 5-7 years ago, depending upon the school, to become recognized as State Schools of Character. This year William Penn along with 6 other schools and the School District as a whole were up for our 5-year renewal for this designation.
I am honored to report that William Penn along with those 6 other schools and the district as a whole successfully met all of the criteria to be recognized as Pennsylvania State Schools of Character for 2020. We will now move forward with the application and recognition process to be designated as National Schools of Character!
This is a tremendous honor for us as a school community as it recognizes everyone’s efforts in providing our students with a positive school experience where we strive to cultivate students’ social, emotional, and academic development at school. No individual is perfect and no individual school is perfect but this designation honors and recognizes our collective efforts together.
Please take the time to review the press release below from Character.org. There is much to celebrate and be proud of as a school community:)
As a reminder, during this time of the year sometimes winter weather may impact our school day resulting in dismissal changes or cancellations. Anytime that there is a change to the school day it will be communicated through our normal communication outlets which include the following: Blackboard Connect Phone Call-E-Mail-text, District Website, Remind Application, and local news outlets ABC, NBC, FOX, CBS. Typically decisions are made between 5:00-6:00 AM. Our fingers will be crossed that this doesn’t happen too often this winter!
It’s been great to hear and see our preparations for our Spring Musical which will debut this year during the first weekend in April (April 3 & 4). Under the direction of Mrs. O’Brien, William Penn will present James and the Giant Peach this year. I’m confident that our students will bring their best performance possible when the show is presented. With this being my 5th year at William Penn, the excitement, passion, and togetherness that our annual Spring Musical creates for our students and the school never get old to witness. We hope that you can attend one of our performances over those two days in April. Please be on the lookout for information over the coming month regarding ticket sales information.
Finally, if you haven’t looked at the approved school calendar for the 2020-21 school year yet there is a link that can be found below. I encourage you to please take a close look at it for your planning purposes for next school year.

CELL PHONE REMINDER
We follow a simple saying and rule at William Penn regarding cell phones.
"Off and Away During the Day"
There are detailed expectations regarding cell phone use in the District's Code of Conduct on Pgs 9-11. At William Penn, we try to make these detailed expectations simple to remember and follow with our mantra "Off and Away During the Day."
At this point in the year, we have provided our students with multiple notices and reminders regarding the expectations of cell phone use during the instructional day. Because of this, future violations for students will lead to both disciplinary action (up to and including after school detentions) and the requirement of parents/guardians to pick up their child's cell phone from school at their earliest convenience. This also includes expectations for headphones during the school day during non-instructional time.
We recognize that many parents desire that their child have a phone for various reasons but we do not want to interrupt or distract the learning environment at school. Please do not call or text your child during the school day. If there is a need for your child to call home they are required to report to the office and use our student designated office phone. There has been a recent increase in situations where students and parents have texted each other during the school day. This has led to interruptions to the learning environment and confusion in our main office regarding arrangements being made between students and parents. We thank you in advance for your support regarding this matter.
This information is read daily on our morning show and students have instant access on their Chromebook Clever Login Page. Updated DAILY, this is an awesome way to stay connected to our DAILY/WEEKLY events!

News and Information:
We're on a roll so far this year with our Box Tops Program and have done so well that we've needed to reset our GOAL for the YEAR.
We encourage this free fundraising for our school opportunity for all parents! All that's necessary is for you to download the app, click a few buttons, shop, scan your receipt, and the rest is history!
Please clip and send in traditional Box Tops with your child’s name clearly marked. Use a baggie, envelope, or a collection sheet – whatever is easiest for you! Just send them in!! There is a bin in the front lobby where students can drop off the box tops.
Eventually, going forward, instead of clipping and checking expiration dates, all Box Tops will be earned digitally by scanning your receipt within 14 days of purchase. The new app will scan your receipt, find participating products, and instantly add Box Tops to our school’s earnings online. (Apple Link) (Android Link)
And while there are still traditional box tops that you can clip and collect for credit, you can scan your receipts for credit as well - earning 2x for our school. So please scan your receipts within 14 days of purchase and give credit to your child.
25 Book Challenge - The 25 Book Challenge is on! Each student who reads 12 books by the halfway mark of the school year (January 27) gets their name in the showcase and a small prize. Students are asked to show their language arts or English teacher their reading log in order to be recognized. If they read 25 books by the end of the year, they will be recognized once again and another small prize.
