WP News Brief 2019

Strive for Success-Own Your Actions-Act Safely-Respond Respectfully

Big picture

First, we want to thank all of our parents and PTO members who helped to make our annual school book fair in October another great success for our students! In today’s digital age it was still awesome to see how many students purchased books that they could actually put their hands on and turn the pages in from our book fair! Keep on Reading!

As we flipped the calendar to the month of November I was reminded the other day that a quarter of the school year has almost passed already! Monday, November 4 marks the end of the first marking period for students and staff.

As we close out the first marking period this week we anticipate report cards going live in the Home Access Center the week of November 18. You will be notified by email from the district when report cards go live.

Our 6th-grade students and staff are in the planning stages for parent-teacher conferences which will be held in the middle of November. Parents & guardians of 6th-grade students, please be on the lookout for documentation regarding conference scheduling and please return it as soon as possible.

As we look ahead and plan for our 6th-grade conferences please review the following information regarding our conference days this month.

On both of the scheduled conference days, our 7th & 8th-grade students will operate on a normal full-day schedule.

Thursday, November 21: Early dismissal for ONLY 6th-grade students

Friday, November 22: No School for ONLY 6th-grade students

There are two great opportunities for parents this month that are quickly approaching. First,

there is an excellent informational presentation that is being presented this week on Wednesday, November 6 at 7:00 at Pennwood Middle School. “KEEPING OUR KIDS SAFE,” is a presentation that should prove to be engaging and informational in nature as a local agent from the FBI provides us with information about cyber safety. Following the presentation by the FBI parents will then hear from a representative from the CARON foundation on the dangers of vaping. Please use the link below to access the informational flyer regarding this event.

There is also another great opportunity for parents on Tuesday, November 12 at 7:00 at Pennwood Middle School! On this night, parents will learn about the district’s new ALICE protocols being introduced and implemented across the entire school district this year. School safety and security are of paramount importance to our School District. As we continue to review and improve our safety procedures, we have adopted a research-based threat response program known as ALICE. ALICE stands for alert, lockdown, inform, counter, and evacuate. It is a nationally recognized options-based response program. Whereas the traditional lockdown approach encourages everyone to stay in place, ALICE encourages participants to consider options and then respond, which might include evacuating the situation.

For this event, we have invited a guest speaker from the ALICE program who will provide a comprehensive overview of the program and dispel any misunderstandings about the ALICE approach. This will be the only opportunity this year to hear directly from the foremost expert on ALICE.

I hope you will join us for this important event.

Our 7th graders are looking forward to their first dance of the school year which will occur on Friday, November 15th. Tickets will go on sale the week of the dance in the lobby during student arrival in the morning. Tickets cost $3.00 for the event and is open only to 7th grade William Penn students. This annual tradition is one that is always well attended and is a great way for the students to celebrate the end of the first marking period and the start of a four day weekend! Our PTO will be seeking some donations to help support this event for our students. Please be on the lookout for further information.

Our high school will continue to open its doors to our 8th-grade students and parents on Thursday, December 12 at 6:30 at the High School once again offers Curriculum Night. This event is geared towards our current 8th-grade students and parents/guardians to help them better understand all of the course offerings at Pennsbury High School. Believe it or not, the course selection process for our 8th-grade families will begin in December for the 2020-21 school year!

We hope that this event will help to provide parents with information about all the options that will exist for them next school year. However, please don’t hesitate to reach out at any point this school year to your child’s counselor, teachers, or administration for help. This process can sometimes feel overwhelming and we are here to support you through the process!

Finally, our high school will continue to open its doors to our 8th-grade students and parents on Thursday, December 6 at 7:00 at the High School once again offers Program of Studies Night. This event is geared towards our current 8th-grade students and parents/guardians to help them better understand all of the course offerings at Pennsbury High School. Believe it or not, the course selection process for our 8th-grade families will begin in December for the 2019-20 school year!

Until next time…

Chris Becker

We follow a simple saying and rule at William Penn regarding cell phones.

"Off and Away During the Day"

We recognize that many parents desire that their child have a phone for various reasons but we do not want to interrupt or distract the learning environment at school. Please do not call or text your child during the school day. If there is a need for your child to call home they are required to report to the office and use our student designated office phone. There has been a recent increase in situations where students and parents have texted each other during the school day. This has led to interruptions to the learning environment and confusion in our main office regarding arrangements being made between students and parents. We thank you in advance for your support regarding this matter.

*Box Tops Fall Contest -

Please clip and send in traditional Box Tops with your child’s name clearly marked. Use a baggie, envelope, or a collection sheet – whatever is easiest for you! Just send them in!! There is a bin in the front lobby where students can drop off the box tops.

Eventually, going forward, instead of clipping and checking expiration dates, all Box Tops will be earned digitally by scanning your receipt within 14 days of purchase. The new app will scan your receipt, find participating products, and instantly add Box Tops to our school’s earnings online. (Apple Link) (Android Link)

And while there are still traditional box tops that you can clip and collect for credit, you can scan your receipts for credit as well - earning 2x for our school. So please scan your receipts within 14 days of purchase and give credit to your child.
