Updates at Holy Child
From the Principal
September 24, 2018
Dear Parents,
Hoping this letter finds you well. Last week, we began our STAR Testing in Reading and Math. This week, we will complete makeups and send the results home to you soon. As I was monitoring the process, I was really inspired by the prayer Mrs. Sanchez said below with the students. I think it is always helpful to take a step back and remind ourselves that while we always aim for excellence, we know our identity stems from being a child of God, not on our performance. Please know that we emphasize this to the students on our end, and our greatest desire is that they find peace and joy in this environment as we continue to cultivate the search for wisdom in all of our subjects.
Secondly, I wanted to inform you that the archdiocese is starting a new “Elementary Speech League.” This will be a Speech and Drama Club that will improve communication skills and confidence in public speaking. It will be for grades 5-8, and there will be a formal Speech Meet in the spring for all of the elementary schools in the archdiocese. Students may choose a selection in Prose, Poetry, Monologue, Duet, or Bible Reading. I will be the speech coach. We could have practices on Fridays after school. If, however, this will conflict with Chess Club, we could use a couple of lunches a month and increase that as we get closer to the spring. Either way, talk it over with your child, and let me know if you are interested. (We have choir practice on Mondays, and so it does get crowded to fit it all in.)
As I mentioned in my last letter, Drama Club will be meeting on Tuesdays after school once we get started. If you would like your child to participate in “Antigone” please let Mrs. Plass and I know by October 1st jmartinez@holychildnm.com and aplass31@gmail.com. This way, she can start advising how students should prepare for auditions.
Thanks again for helping with the capital campaign events in the past few weeks. We really appreciate it and are excited about what the future holds. It is refreshing to see how enthusiastic the student body is about this endeavor.
Please keep myself and all of the staff in your prayers, as you can be assured you always remain in mine.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Martinez
