Differentiating fairy tales when talking about fiction and non-fiction....
Fiction/NF - I tell them two things:
1. The stories are very old, passed down through many generations
2. Often we don't know who made up the story in the first place (which is why they often say "Retold by..." instead of "By...")

Alternative library closing form...
A friend and I created this spreadsheet to fill out throughout the year to help with the EOY report. I printed it on legal size paper. Feel free to use, redo, or delete.

Studying states, using maps, text features and more....
"My second grade teachers requested the students check out the "state books" from the Bilingual Library of the United States of America books. Teachers use the books to teach text features: title, photos, index, glossary, etc.
In Library, we pretended they were traveling to a different state, using our imaginations and our library book.
Each student chose a different state book, and then located the state on the large wall map, on the globe, and found the state flag on a poster. This fits perfectly with Language Arts (text features) and Social Studies (using maps and globes)
Next week in Library we're reading From Here to there by Margery Cuyler (E CUY). The character in the story is Hispanic, so it does fit in with Hispanic Heritage Month, Sept. 15-Oct. 15. This book starts with Maria Mendoza's family, her house and address, then her town, county, state, country, continent, hemisphere, planet, solar system, galaxy, and universe. Then we read it backwards: universe, galaxy, solar system, etc. I also ask students about their own families, their own street address and phone number, their parents' "real names" (Mary Smith, not just "Mom"). Students name our city, our state, our country, etc. and locate these on the map and globe."

Help us reboot the Friends of AISD Libraries!
One of our Library Media Advisory Council (LMAC) initiatives is rebooting the Friends of AISD Libraries group.
We imagine this group might work on issues and projects such as:
- fundraising
- mending books
- grants
- advocacy and public speaking on our behalf
- supporting under-served libraries
- and more!
We imagine this group might include:
- retired librarians
- local authors
- politicians
- members of different alumni groups
- people in our communities who are "outside" the library world and/or who don't have kids in school
- and more!
Now we need NAMES of people to invite to join this group. Although we'd love super-active parents from your school, we want to widen our scope beyond them, too.
If you know anyone who you think has an interest in supporting our libraries, please:
- Communicate with that person first and ask permission to submit their name. In doing so, secure (at a minimum) a reliable email address.
- Click HERE to enter their name and contact information by Friday, October 9.
You may submit as many names as you like.
You will need to sign in with your AISD login to access the form, so please don't just forward the link and ask people to sign up for themselves - they won't have access.
Our projected next step it to use the contact information we collect to invite people to informational meetings. Submitting a name is in no way a commitment to join the group.
Thank you for your help rebuilding a group that has the potential to do much good work for all of us!
Please contact me or Minda Anderson (Becker Elementary) directly with any questions.
