Distance Learning for All
May 14, 2020
I want to say how much we all appreciate your work during this time as you keep your children connected to school. I know it is not easy. I know it is very difficult. We are in a tough moment. There have rarely been times in history where we've been so isolated from one another while trying to carry on with our day-to-day responsibilities. So, thank you.
Recently, Washington state historian Michael Sullivan pointed out that families and students of today are living through a moment of significant historical importance. He notes that some day people will look back and want to know what life was like during this pandemic.
“In this case, I think it’s worth people recognizing that they are living through a unique moment in history. Now is a good time to make a record of what you’re doing, to create some records that you leave to the generations that follow us,” Sullivan said.
When faced with a crisis, we don't always realize that it is a historical event. This time we do. It is important that we continue to do all we can to acknowledge the patience and efforts of our children and young adults who are isolated from their friends during this crisis.
It is in that spirit that we're working to continue to celebrate the end of the school year and acknowledge the accomplishments of our students, especially the Class of 2020. We are beginning the first steps in our virtual graduation next week. The entire community is invited to attend the virtual graduation on June 5 at 6pm via YouTube. We'll send a link out when the event gets closer.
As we wind down the 2019-20 school year, I want to encourage you to keep going! I know the transition to distance learning has been a challenge, but I am proud of our staff, and our partnerships with our families that are keeping students engaged with their learning.
Finally, election day is Tuesday, May 19. Ballots are due by 8:00 pm. Please learn more about Bond Measure 3-559 by scrolling down in this newsletter.
I appreciate all of your effort, care, and concern as we navigate this time together. As always, I'm grateful to serve the students and families of Canby.
Best,
Trip Goodall

THREE PARKING LOT HOT SPOTS
Please look for signs at each location that show the exact parking lot that has service and explain how to connect to get the best service.
The district is working on bringing free internet to two additional school parking lots. As soon as they're available, we'll let you know.
Thank you to our partners in Clackamas County for providing materials and support to get our new hot spots up and running.

Free Meals & Additional Meal Opportunities
Our nutrition services department is hard at work, continuing to provide free breakfast and lunch to children in the community between the ages of 1-18. You can find out more about the free meal program on our website.
While all meals are free, you may want to consider applying for free or reduced-price school meals if your financial situation has changed. This week, the Oregon Department of Education and the Department of Human Services announced plans to give money for meals (EBT cards) to families with children eligible for free or reduced-price school meals, even if they have received meals from the school since buildings closed in March. The benefits are equivalent of the price of one free lunch and one free breakfast for each eligible child.
You can apply for free or reduced-priced meals here. If you need additional meal support for your family, visit www.needfood.oregon.gov or call 2-1-1.
Bond Measure 3-559
In February, the Canby School District Board of Directors unanimously voted to refer a $75 million bond to voters on May 19, 2020. The bond was filed before Oregon Governor Kate Brown ordered schools to close for the remainder of the 2019-20 school year.
Earlier in the year, a community-led committee determined the scope of the bond and made a recommendation to the Board. The Board then decided it would move forward with the bond.
You will see the bond on your mail-in ballot, which is due by 8:00 pm on Tuesday, May 19, 2020.
