On Monday, Mrs. Emily Paschall came to me and asked if we could integrate technology and tie it in to the story-telling festival. We decided to try www.voki.com. Voki is a free website that allows one to customize a speaking avatar. I had a session with the "Paschalls" that covered how to create a Voki. Wednesday, the 3rd grade attended the story-telling festival. There, the students heard Carmen Deedy tell the story of "Martina, The Beautiful", which is also in their Wonders reading series. Once the students returned, they wrote (with pencil and paper) a summary of the story. Then, Mrs. Paschall, had each of the students create an individual Voki, telling their summary. They did this by typing their summary in the "text to voice" option of Voki. The results were amazing. Fellow ITF, Nikki Robertson at Elkmont High School, tweeted Voki with the following samples and Voki favorited and retweeted it. It was an exciting moment in third grade.
