IGSD ANNUAL NOTICE - HOMELESS CHILDREN/UNACCOMPANIED YOUTH
The McKinney-Vento Act defines homeless children and youth (twenty-one years of age and younger) as:
Children and youth who lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence, and includes children and unaccompanied youth who are:
sharing the housing of other persons due to loss of housing, economic hardship, or a similar reason (sometimes referred to as a “Double-up”);
living in motels, hotels, trailer parks, or camping grounds due to the lack of alternative adequate accommodations;
abandoned in hospitals; or
Awaiting foster care placement;
living in a primary nighttime residence that is a public or private place not designed for or ordinarily used as a regular sleeping accommodation for human beings;
living in cars, parks, public spaces, abandoned buildings, substandard housing, bus or train stations, or similar settings; and
migratory children who qualify as homeless because the children are living in circumstances described above.
If you are personally aware of or are acquainted with any children or youth who may qualify according to the above criteria, the Iowa-Grant School District provides the following assurances to parents and guardians of homeless children and youth and unaccompanied homeless youth:
There shall be immediate enrollment and school participation, even if educational and medical records and proof of residency are not available.
All educational opportunities and related opportunities for homeless students (preschool to age 21), including unaccompanied youth, shall be the same as for the general student population.
Meaningful opportunities for parents to participate in the education of their children. These shall include: special notices of events, parent-teacher conferences, newsletters, and access to student records.
Immediate enrollment and transportation to the school of origin. “School of origin” means the school that a child or youth attended when permanently housed or the school in which the child or youth was last enrolled, including a preschool.
Written explanation of a child or youth’s school placement, other than school of origin or the school requested by the parent, with the right to appeal within the local dispute resolution process.
Please contact Jennifer Leeser, homeless liaison for the Iowa-Grant School District, at (608) 943-6311 or jleeser@igs.k12.wi.us for additional information about the rights and services described above.

IOWA-GRANT ELEMENTARY / MIDDLE SCHOOL
From the Desk of Mrs. Gallagher
Welcome Back! It will be great to see the students back in the building. This fall we will welcome a few new and familiar faces to our elementary/middle school. Ms. McMannes will be in the physical education department to fill Ms. Martinez’s role now that she has retired. We are excited that Ms. Martinez will jump out of retirement to help us part-time as our middle school athletic director. Ms. Stevens will be back as our art teacher for the 2022-23 school year. We will have Ms. Wiegman as a long-term substitute in 5th and 6th-grade science and Eric Garde as a student teacher in Ms. Zajicek’s room to start the year. We look forward to working with all of these fine people. Ms. Hasburgh and Ms. Kennicker have worked very hard to help get things ready for the start of the year in the main office and I appreciate all that they have done this summer from summer recreation to fall preparation for our students.
We also welcome our new superintendent Mr. Shimshak. I am so happy to have him be a part of the Iowa-Grant school district and that I am continuing as your IGEMS 2-8 principal. I absolutely love the work I get to do with students, staff, and parents. This is such a special place with small communities that come together to accomplish great things for students. If you need anything, please reach out to me. I will try my best to understand the need and help. Have a great start to your school year I - GEMS! You are all truly gems in a challenging world.
Building Friendship Skills - Mrs. Bast
Last month I shared the power of having consistent routines at home. This month I’m sharing some great tips from ready4K.com for things you can do at home to help your child learn some qualities of a good friend and skills to help them develop friendships with others.
Friends are Good Listeners
Practice listening games, such as “Simon Says.”
Encourage active listening: before you speak you might say something like, “1,2,3, eyes and ears on me.”
Model listening to your child.
Friends Notice Feelings
Talk about feelings: for example, “What’s one thing you’re excited about doing today?” or “It looks like you might be feeling frustrated. What can I do to help?”
As you read a book to your child, ask how a character might be feeling.
Express feelings through drawing, movement, or music.
Validate your child’s feelings. Let them know all feelings are okay.
Friends Work Together
Try giving your child a job that helps the whole family, such as wiping down the table after a meal or sorting the laundry.
Involve your child in group activities so they can practice sharing things such as blocks and crayons.
Practice taking turns when playing games such as “Go Fish” or “Tag.”
Friends Appreciate Each Other
Notice acts of kindness and friendship in others. Point them out to your child.
Friends often have lots in common, but our differences can bring us together too.
Being able to form friendships with others is a lifelong skill which can bring great joy. I’m looking forward to a fantastic new school year and to the new friendships we will make along the way!
