**Important Health News**
Dear Parents,
We work hard to ensure the safety and welfare of our students, and we strive to keep our parents informed of issues that may affect their child. In light of this, we would like to inform you that there has been diagnosed and treated cases of shigellosis involving some of our students and staff.
What is it?
Shigellosis is a highly contagious infection caused by bacteria called Shigella. Shigella is found in the feces of infected individuals and is spread by ingesting the bacteria via contaminated food, water, or objects, or by direct contact with the feces of an infected person. Symptoms include diarrhea (which may be bloody), vomiting, fever, and/or abdominal cramps. The illness usually begins 1 to 3 days after bacterial exposure and symptoms typically last 4 to 7 days. When a person has signs or symptoms, they are more likely to spread the bacteria but may spread the bacteria for 1-2 weeks after symptoms resolve.
Shigella germs spread when people put something in their mouths or swallow something that has come into contact with the stool (poop) of someone sick with Shigella. Children may get Shigella germs on their hands by touching surfaces (for example, toys, bathroom fixtures, changing tables, diaper pails) that a sick person used.
We have implemented the following measures on district campuses:
- Encouraging proper hand hygiene on all campuses, hand sanitizer in all classrooms
- Use of anti-bacterial wipes in high-traffic areas
- Contracted with GermBlast, an outside company that will treat and disinfect all campuses this week
Here’s what you can do at home:
- Supervise handwashing of toddlers and small children after they use the bathroom, wash your hands and your infant’s hands with soap and water after diaper changes
- Do NOT prepare food if you are sick, Do NOT share food with anyone if you or your family members are sick
- If you or your child experience shigellosis symptoms, visit your health care provider for diagnosis and treatment. Stay home while sick or until symptom-free for 24 hours without medication.
With a team effort approach between our families and school, we can help control and prevent the spread of this illness. If you have any questions, please contact your student’s campus nurse, we appreciate your partnership in keeping everyone healthy.
Sincerely,
Melissa Burden, RN
Brock ISD
School Safety Week
Dear parents/guardians,
It is the purpose and mission of Brock ISD to provide all students with an educational program that will allow them to develop to their full potential intellectually, physically, and socially in order to be responsible citizens and contributing members of society. Inherent within this purpose and mission is the belief that all students can learn and that the school, the home, and the community can make a difference in the lives of its students. One of the goals in helping to fulfill this mission is to provide safe, secure and nurturing schools.
Brock Elementary will be sponsoring National School Safety Week next week, October 21-25. We will be discussing the proper way to respond to a variety of drills. The practice of these drills is designed to help our staff and students know what procedures to follow in case of an emergency. The drills we will be conducting will include a fire drill, a reverse evacuation drill, a shelter in place drill, a severe weather drill, a medical response team drill, and a lockdown drill. We will be discussing the procedures and the fact that these are drills during lunches on Monday, October 21, as a start to Safety Week. As parents and guardians, you can be a part of our plan by discussing safety with your child each evening by asking them what they remember about the procedures. The drills will be conducted Monday through Friday.
We know education works best when tied into home. An activity you could consider doing at home is discussing what your family would do in case of an emergency. Planning a meeting place in case of a fire, ensuring that everyone knows what routes to take in case of a fire, and discussing 911 are ideas for showing how we prepare for emergencies at home as well as at school. Your family could draw a map of home and chart the evacuation route. You could also visit a fire station or police station for children to meet the people who respond in an emergency.
Please know that your child’s safety is of utmost concern to us, and we feel this is an important piece of our Mission. We will continue to practice throughout the year, but this will be a concentrated effort to ensure that we conduct each drill early. If you come to the school the week of Oct. 21-25, please understand we may not allow you into the campus until the drill is complete. We will be conducting these drills as efficiently as possible, but as real-world as possible as well. Working together will allow us to provide the best environment for our scholars.
Sincerely,
Erin Griffith & Ranae Lane
