A newsletter for Walnut Hills High School

Principal's Message

November 13, 2021

Dear Walnut Hills High School Families:

I hope that you have had a great week! It is hard to believe, but this past week was the midterm week of the 2nd quarter. Please take a moment this weekend to check your child's midterm grades and have some conversation about how he or she thinks this year is going so far. Listen for areas of concern as well as areas where there is interest, success and growing confidence. As much as students - and parents too - tend to focus on grades, it is helpful to praise their efforts and reinforce that connection between effort and outcomes.

Things tend to go quickly from here to the end of the second semester. Just a reminder that the semester concludes with semester exams the week of December 13-17. Here is a copy of the exam schedule for planning purposes. Semester exams are 20% of the overall semester grade with quarters 1 and 2 each counting for 40% of the semester grade. Last week the Counseling Department presented "Preparing for Exams" for our junior high students who will be experiencing cumulative exams for the first time. If you missed that presentation, it is linked on the Junior High Google site (see below).

Finally, we are in the middle of an exciting fine arts seasons and so happy that our students can perform again in front of live audiences. This week the senior high play "Rhinoceros" is playing for sold out performances in the Rick Steiner Black Box Theatre. There are so many outstanding opportunities to see and hear our students' talents in the upcoming month. We hope you will be able to join us for a performance!

Legacy of Excellence

Did you know that ONE-THIRD of our school’s annual discretionary budget is supported by the generosity of Walnut Hills’ parents? Many of the things that make Walnut Hills special, simply won’t happen without YOUR annual support of the Legacy of Excellence (“LOE”) fundraising campaign.

The Legacy of Excellence campaign funds:

• Textbooks and other academic tools to support our students;

• Orchestra and Band Instruments (large instruments -Double Bass, Tuba, etc.);

• College Information Center staff salaries;

• Salaries of WHHS coaches and our year around strength coach;

• Uniforms/Equipment for WHHS Eagles sports teams;

• New Choral Risers and Acoustic Sound Shells for the auditorium stage; and

• Staff Appreciation Gifts.

Can we count YOU to help Walnut Hills reach its Legacy of Excellence 2021/22 campaign goal of $120,000?

After a very long, two-year hiatus, we're very happy to announce that the Annual Library Book Sale is back! For those new to Walnut, here's the scoop: the book sale can only happen thanks to the generous donations of used books we get throughout the year. Those donations can happen any time - so think of us next time you're cleaning out your book shelves. During our book sale, no book costs more than $1 - and we even sell some for as low as 25 cents! It's a great opportunity for you to expand your home collection! We also have other items such as craft kits and board games.

This year's sale will happen during Thanksgiving Week - how appropriate is that? The sale will be Monday and Tuesday, November 22-23. Set up will happen the previous Friday, November 19th.

memorable moments of the week

On October 27, Mr. Scudder’s Time to Speak class collaborated with the two elementary schools for practice with reading fluency and delivery. Time to Speak students read to elementary library students at North Avondale Montessori and AWL via Google Meet. This collaboration through the libraries at each school was an amazing opportunity for our Eagles to show their leadership-- and for kids to ask important questions about high school life, Walnut and more. Both the high school and elementary students LOVED the experience, and we have more collaborations in the works!

The 2021-2022 AP Physics students, instructed by Mrs. Coats-Haan, took their learning to the Walnut Hills High School natatorium for our first ever Cardboard Regatta. The WHHS Chatterbox captured this video for those who were not able to attend the in-person regatta. The regatta combined rigorous academics with fun for memorable learning!
