Weekly Newsletter 11/13/2020
Message to Parents from Dr. Jeanette Ball
Dear Judson ISD Families,
As we get closer to the Thanksgiving holiday, I am reminded of how thankful I am to work with such amazing staff members. Our staff at Judson ISD really feel like family, they keep us happy.
While preparing for the holiday, we want to know what you are thankful for at JISD. Maybe it’s a teacher or principal going above and beyond for you and your student. Maybe it’s a program or service like curbside lunch service you're thankful for. Whatever it is, let us know by submitting here. We’ll use these submissions for social media content during the thanksgiving break to share with our community how grateful we all are during this time.

GIFTED & TALENTED REFERRAL WINDOW OPEN
Do you know a student who shows high achievement in areas such as intellectual, creative, or artistic capabilities, or in specific academic areas? If so, you may consider referring that student to the Judson ISD Gifted and Talented (GT) Program.
The gifted and talented referral window is open during the months of November and December.
Referrals can be submitted by a teacher, a parent, or any person that can provide information as to why a student should be considered for the Gifted and Talented Program. Referrals can be made online using the linked Google Form or a paper referral form in English or Spanish can be printed, completed, and submitted to the campus GT teacher (printed copies of forms can also be requested from the campus).
GT Testing begins in January. For more information about the GT Program, please contact your campus GT teacher or the Department of Advanced Academics at 210-945-5316.

Wobble N Gobble VIRTUAL 5k
The Judson Education Foundation (JEF) & Judson ISD are hosting the 3rd Annual 5k Fun Run, the "Wobble N' Gobble." Proceeds benefit JEF Student Scholarships and Innovative Teacher Grants in Judson ISD.
What is a Virtual 5K?
A virtual race is very similar to a live race. You register, run/walk (on the honor system), get a customizable finisher certificate, and race shirt to support a good cause. Still, they differ from live events because you get to complete your run from anywhere you like… the neighborhood, a local park, treadmill, track, downtown, or country roads. You get to decide!
Pricing
- JISD student $15
- JISD employee & parent $25
- Non-JISD student $20
- Community members $30
Packet Pickup
We highly encourage all to register for in-person packet pick up – that information will follow. Still, if you can’t, or if you have family/friends that would like to support our endeavors from afar, a shipping option is available. Packets will include a T-shirt, customizable finisher certificate, and swag.
Register before November 16th to secure a T-shirt: https://jef.revtrak.net/annual-5k-fun-run#/list
Registration ends November 20th.
Thanksgiving Food Distribution
To safely serve our community, we will not host a sit-down feast this year but instead have partnered with San Antonio Food Bank to host a food distribution. Volunteers will deliver pre-boxed farm-to-family fresh food items that will be made.
Veterans Day
Veterans Memorial High School celebrated veterans in a remarkable way. The school hosted a special socially distanced ceremony to acknowledge the men and women who have served the country in the US armed forces. The school honored our veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good. The ceremony included a poem and a brief history of Veterans Day, and a reading of veterans' individual names in the VMHS family and community. Right before a beautiful rendition of TAPS was played, Judson ISD Board Trustee and veteran, Ms. Debra Eaton, gave tribute to the men and women who have served our country and spoke of her experiences as SFC in the United States Army.

Volunteer Sign Up
Just a few hours a week can have a meaningful impact on a school or child. Whether mentoring a student, helping the front office greet visitors, or providing classroom assistance, it's through the efforts of people like you that we can do great things. Volunteers play a vital role in transforming our schools and the educational experience of our students.
Requirements
- Must be 18 years of age or older
- All volunteers must complete an application at JISD Frontline Volunteering.
- All volunteers must consent to a background check each school year.
- Volunteers must read the Volunteer Handbook Training.
Free/Reduced Lunch Applications: It Still Matters
The Judson ISD Child Nutrition Department wants you to know that even though all meals are no cost to students through the end of 2020, the Free/Reduced Price Meal applications are still critical…to you and your student because it’s about more than just food.
Did you know that this application also...
- Can provide discounted fees to register for AP tests (from $64 to $18)
- Help pay fees to participate in sports
- Can reduce costs of college applications (discounted or even no cost)
- Help you qualify for low-cost internet service
- Has a bearing on funding for school programs and services for students
The no-cost meal program will, at some point, end, and we want to make sure that your child gets a nutritious meal without financial roadblocks. See if you qualify. Or, you can get going by filling out the Free/Reduced Meal application now.
These applications are accepted all year, but the earlier you apply, the sooner you can benefit from meals and discounts.
*Note: If your child attends a CEP (Community Eligibility Provision) designated school, you do not need to submit this application.

Curbside Meal Service
The District has four locations where no cost curbside meals are available to students for pickup
JISD will continue to serve curbside meals at the following locations from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm Monday through Friday:
- Judson High School
- Wagner High School
- Spring Meadows Elementary
- Rolling Meadows Elementary
If these locations produce hardship for your family, please contact your campus and/or JISD Child Nutrition to inquire about alternative arrangements. This change aims to best utilize the resources available so the district can better address the shifting student needs developing at our schools. Our intent is that no student goes hungry, regardless if they are enrolled in virtual instruction or in-person.
Tell us your story!
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Judson ISD's Multimedia Coordinator, Briana Estrada, at 210-945-5411 or bestrada@judsonisd.org. Thank you in advance for your participation.
