Raising Digitally Responsible Youth ~ A Parent's Guide
Please note, I will highlight sections each week.
This Week's Focus -
The Essentials:
Hashtag:
A hashtag is a symbol (#) added before a word that turns that word into a searchable category indexed by the social media network and becomes discoverable by other users.
Instagram and Twitter are the primary platforms where hashtags are used.
Hashtags are a way of making it easier to find, follow, and contribute to a conversation.
Username:
A username is a unique online identity that is chosen to represent someone online or on social media. Most platforms make you choose a username when you create the account.
Passwords:
We all know the challenge of trying to remember our password for a website or an app and it’s easy to fall into habits of using the exact same passwords, easy ones, for all of our logins. This is a dangerous practice, especially if it is something easily guessable such as a dog or our kid’s name and their birthday!
We should remind our children not to share their passwords with their friends!
This is the number 1 reason behind accounts getting “hacked”.
Use different passwords for different sites and build strong ones: mix of numbers, letters, and special characters (!@#$%^&*).
These are the most common passwords statistically used around the world (based on data breaches). If any of these are yours – change them!
1. password
2. 12345
3. 123456789
4. qwerty (partial top line of the keyboard)
5. qwertyuiop (top line of the keyboard)
6. letmein
7. abc123
8. 111111
9. welcome

State Testing
State testing is right around the corner. We know that this time of year brings with it a lot of mixed emotions for our students. We see many students struggle with test anxiety and it can show up in headaches, crying, trouble concentrating, avoidance of school etc. Both Mrs. Bir and Mrs. Smith will be working with students in grade 3-7 in an effort to plan, prepare, incorporate positive self-talk and we could use your help. While we do our part, we hope that you can help us by taking steps now to prepare.
Somethings that you can do at home are:
- Encourage a good night sleep
- Give positive affirmations (i.e. notes in their lunches or book bags)
- Talking about the test
- Reading each night
- Ensure that your child is in the habit of arriving to school on time.
- Attend your child's school conference to discuss your students strengths/weakness and how else you can support their preparation!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Bir and Mrs. Smith
Bedtime Math App
It is a quick simple story with a few leveled math questions, only takes about 3-4 minutes each evening and promotes great conversations.
Check it out by going to your app store (andriod or apple) and download it. It is FREE.
Outdoor Recess Guidelines
The weather is starting to get a little warmer.
Please make sure your child has the proper clothing to go outside.
Please make sure students have proper foot ware - sandals are not allowed on playground equipment.
