The Great Outdoors: Story of the Week
Virtual Field Trip
“There are no words that can tell the hidden spirit of the wilderness, that can reveal its mystery, its melancholy, and its charm.” ~ Theodore Roosevelt
Hello Adventurers,
Camping anyone? The 26th President of the United States, Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt, loved the great outdoors. Teddy loved to hunt, fish, and explore our country. Teddy believed that the United States became a great country because of the natural resources that were so abudant. He knew we needed to conserve our natural resources or we ran the risk of depleting those resources. When he became president in 1901, he used his influence to protect our public lands. He created the United States Forest Service (USFS), dedicated land to national forests, federal bird reserves, game preserves, national parks, and monuments. As president, Roosevelt protected roughly 230 million acres of public land. (National Park Service, 2020)
Today we have 419 national parks that cover 84 million acres. Interestingly, we have more parks but fewer acres of protected land. Hmmm, what would Roosevelt think?
