Battle of Iwo Jima 75th Anniversary

Join the National Museum of the Pacific War for an interactive presentation commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Iwo Jima. Hear from a WWII veteran as he shares his experiences of landing in the first wave with the 5th Marine Division at the base of Mt. Suribachi on February 19, 1945. The program will also include museum staff providing additional information on the 36-day struggle, photographs, video footage, and artifacts connected to the Battle of Iwo Jima.

Join us for an amazing program that's all about the animals. This program features two different live animals and a question-and-answer session with an animal outreach specialist. Discover amazing animal facts as we compare and contrast both animals and learn more about their unique adaptations.
NOTE: Each class can submit one animal-related question they'd like answered live to education@fortworthzoo.org. Questions will be drawn at random, however, due to time not all questions will be answered in the program. Please include your school's name, grade level, and teacher's name with your class question.

Explore the Sun and Its Features
Presented by McDonald Observatory

Get ready for your students to make SAFE observations of our star (the Sun) and its incredible features using telescopes from McDonald Observatory! During the videoconference, your students will briefly explore the UT McDonald Observatory via helicopter tour, make live observations of the Sun with telescopes equipped with special video cameras and solar filters (weather permitting), complete a Student Sun Drawing Sheet, and learn about the solar features they observe on the sun by watching unique science demonstrations. Telescope views will be real-time; in case of inclement weather or equipment problems, recorded views will be provided.

Celebrate the Year of the Rat! Explore the history of Lunar New Year while viewing artwork and artifacts from China and other Asian countries. Students will read The Great Race by author Dawn Casey, learn about the animals of the Chinese Zodiac tradition and identify the animal and characteristics that represent their year of birth. Each student will then create zodiac-themed hongbao (a lucky red envelope they will fill with good wishes and a gift for a friend).

Through a reading of Anansi by author Gerald McDermott, students will explore themes of resourcefulness, selflessness, and family relationships. After viewing a Ghanese artifact from the OJAC collection, students will investigate the Adinkra cloth-printing process and its importance in Ashanti culture. Students will also discover the Ghanese children’s board game of Achi, a game that looks like a spider web and is played much like tic-tac-toe. Following discussion, students will create their own game boards inspired by Adinkra cloth and the web of Anansi the Spider.
Diamondback Delicacy - The Delicious Decline of America's Brackish Water Turtle

Diamondback terrapins, America’s only brackish water turtle, faced a severe population decline in the late 1800s. At the time, turtle soup was a popular dish, and the delicious terrapins were nearly hunted to extinction. Join Sea Center Texas to learn how careful conservation planning saved this species from demise. We’ll learn all about the terrapin’s biology, life cycle, and habitat, as well as the current threats to the population. You’ll even get to meet Sea Center’s resident terrapin, Truman!
