Friday Focus
And the winners are....
The Awards
Each year you nominate excellent people to represent the building, and selecting an overall winner from the Middle School is not an easy task. This building is teaming with staff that love their job, have a passion for education, are team players, and so much more. I want to take a few moments to congratulate this years winners. It is truly a special Friday Focus today.
Congratulations to Mr. Shepardson!
Now, you will never hear Mr. Shepardson tell you how wonderful he is. As common practitioner of introspection on teaching, student behavior, lessons, and life, Joe is always looking at what areas of his instruction he can improve upon. It is one of the many reasons that he is the 2019 Teacher of the Year for the Mitchell Middle School. Please take a minute to stop down and remind him of the impact he has had on kids here at MMS.
Congratulations to C-Dawg!
Mr. Christensen is truly a great find to run the Library at MMS. He has turned it into what a library should be; the central hub of the school.
Just one additional note, the picture above is not actually C-Dawg. It is Birdie Lou, his other helper in the library. Thanks for all you do Mr. Christensen!
Make sure to stop in the lounge for a rolls and coffee to congratulate these two!

Another Book Fair!
PD Session Information
What about the ACE Presentation? Well, cool story to go along with that... We had a SWIVL in the room and it recorded wonderful video of the presentation. Due to a technical error by yours truly we did not have sound. If you want to watch the video I can send you the link, but it probably wouldn't do you much good! The handout would be worth looking over though! Want a copy, let me know.
Enjoying PD

Connecting the Dots
It's the Heads or Buts game!
Tobacco is...
This is a fact I have in my HEAD or BUT there’s more to it than that
-
- Tobacco kills more people than AIDS, murder, alcohol abuse, and drunk driving combined. (head)
- Tobacco kills prematurely. On average, smokers lose 15 years of life, and up to half of all smokers will die of tobacco-related causes. (head)
- Juuling is safe (but that is what the companies that make them are trying to make you believe)
- “If smoking continues at current rates, 5.6 million—or 1 out of every 13—of today’s children will ultimately die prematurely from a smoking-related illness (head)
- The filter on the cigarette is what makes it safe (but) that is what the tobacco companies lead you to believe
- Smoking is kind of sexy (but that is what the cigarette ads show-even though we know that smokers smell bad and that is not sexy)
- Nicotine is highly addictive and can harm adolescent brain development. (head)
- e-cigarettes have no tobacco in them (head)
- Juuling is not expensive (but the average Juul user spends $180 a month on Juul pods.
- The addiction rate for nicotine is higher than the addiction rates for marijuana, alcohol, cocaine; symptoms of serious nicotine addiction can often occur only weeks or even just days after youth “experimentation” with use first begins. (head)
- Tobacco companies target youth with their advertising (head) and spend on average $26 million each day
- The federal government pays $170 Billion each year on medical costs that are a result of smoking (head)
