Fifteen MLK Students Earn College Board's National Recognition!

Congratulations to 15 of our own MLK students who are a part of 62,000 students from across the country earning academic honors from the College Board’s National Recognition Programs! These National Recognition Programs grant underrepresented students with academic honors that can be included on college and scholarship applications and connect students with universities across the country, helping them stand out during the admissions process. Colleges and scholarship programs use these honors to identify students from underrepresented groups through College Board’s Student Search Service.

The students earned this recognition by excelling on their PSAT/NMSQT, PSAT 10, or AP Exams and in their classrooms. Students who may be eligible have a GPA of 3.5 or higher and have excelled on the PSAT/NMSQT or PSAT 10, or earned a score of 3 or higher on two or more AP Exams; and are African American or Black, Hispanic American or Latinx, Indigenous, and/or attend school in a rural area or small town. Eligible students are invited to apply during their sophomore or junior year, and are awarded at the beginning of the next school year. Congratulations!

Thanks to your generous support we have raised $53,753 toward our $60,000 INVEST goal! We need YOUR help to reach this year's goal!

The INVEST campaign provides funding to enhance resources for students and equips our teachers with tools to be more effective in the classroom. Your tax-deductible donation to the MLK INVEST campaign will help create a strong foundation for future success. We all have varying financial circumstances, however, if we all give as we are able – some more, some less - we can meet this goal together. Every donation, regardless of the amount, matters and makes a difference. Can we count on your support?

Please consider maximizing your ability to give by pledging an amount that will be divided in 5 payments. As an added incentive, all donors will receive an MLK sticker or magnet, and $200+ donors will receive an MLK WHITE OUT T-SHIRT while supplies last.

AND as an added incentive two lucky INVEST Donors will receive a $25 gift card to the MLK Spirit Store each week until Fall Break! This week's lucky winners are: Gabrielle Rodriguez and Anders Miller.

If you haven’t made your INVEST donation or pledge yet, please do so today at

PSAT Testing Information

Dear 8th – 11th Grade Students/Families,

On Tuesday, October 25th, the PSAT will be administered at MLK to every 8th-11th grade student. The PSAT is a standardized test that provides firsthand practice for the SAT and gives students access to college and career planning tools. Taking the PSAT as a junior allows students a chance to become National Merit Scholars, which often translates to scholarships at highly selective universities. MLK had 8 National Merit semi-finalists in the class of 2021, 5 semi-finalists in the class of 2022, and 7 semi-finalists in the class of 2023!

MNPS is using a new payment platform this school year (School Cash Online) and payment for the PSAT can be made online by clicking the grade-level specific links below. Please be sure to enter your child’s name in the box that asks “who are you purchasing this for?” If you haven’t already created an account, the system will direct you to register for an account or check-out as a guest. You will also be able to “select more items” and add additional payments for multiple children (if applicable).

We want to ensure our students have every advantage available to them. Thanks for your immediate attention and support!

Thank you to the PTSA!

988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline

988 has been designated as the new three-digit dialing code that will route callers to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (now known as the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline), and is now active across the United States.

When you call, text, or chat 988, you will be connected to trained counselors that are part of the existing Lifeline network. These trained counselors will listen, understand how their problems are affecting you, provide support, and connect you to resources if necessary.

The previous Lifeline phone number (1-800-273-8255) will always remain available to people in emotional distress or suicidal crisis.

The Lifeline’s network of over 200 crisis centers has been in operation since 2005, and has been proven to be effective. It’s the counselors at these local crisis centers who answer the contacts the Lifeline receives every day. Numerous studies have shown that callers feel less suicidal, less depressed, less overwhelmed and more hopeful after speaking with a Lifeline counselor.

Answer the call! These centers are looking to bring on new volunteers and paid employees. You will receive training, so if you are a caring person who wants to help those in crisis, apply today. Find your opportunity:

  • For ways to support your local Lifeline network crisis center, visit our Crisis Centers page here.
  • To learn about the impact of the Lifeline, visit our new By the Numbers page.
  • To learn about what happens when you call, text, or chat with the Lifeline, click here.
  • To learn more about the history of 988, visit here.
  • To learn how Vibrant Emotional Health, the nonprofit administrator of the Lifeline, has been supporting states’ implementation planning for 988 through grants, check here.
