Teaching from the heart

This quote from Dalai Lama is one I think of often. I've always believed that kids of all ages learn better academically from people they like and trust. I also believe that a big part of education is educating kids socially and emotionally as well. We are teaching kids to be kind, caring, and compassionate; to cope; to be resilient; and to become people of good character.

To help with this education, getting kids involved both in extra curricular activities and in their learning is a great way to help teach kids important life lessons. As you will see in this newsletter, our staff and students have been incredibly busy learning and growing as people.

Thanks to all of you, GHV staff and parents, for remembering to educate the hearts of our students in addition to their academics!

ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT BANQUET

Speaking of academics, Friday was the 16th Annual Academic Achievement Recognition Banquet sponsored by Clear Lake Bank & Trust. My weekly newsletters often focus on all the amazing extra curricular events taking place in our GHV community. It's wonderful that CLB& T sponsors this event to showcase the great things going on academically in our school as well.

In order to qualify for the Academic Achievement Banquet, students must be in the top 10% of their class or have an exemplary ACT or SAT score in the 93rd percentile or higher.

It is an honor to be the principal of such an amazing group of outstanding students!

GHV Esports

Across Iowa, more and more schools are adding esports to their list of extra curricular activities. According to the Iowa High School Esports Association, their mission is the following:

"To support safe and competitive environments for Iowa high school students while promoting team building, communication and critical thinking through esports programs. These programs will provide an opportunity for more students to feel connected to school as well as provide future opportunities in the fields of technology and esports."

Mr. Graham and Mr Ward have accepted the challenge of adding esports to GHV this year. I am happy to announce that our GHV Esports team finished 2nd place in their very first competition this past Friday.

Pictured above are the students who participated in the competition:

Brandon Roberts, Donovan Grimm, Benz Lester, Cameron Navratil, Tyler Groom, Nolan Balk

Congratulations to these students as well as Mr. Graham and Mr. Ward. WELL DONE!

FCCLA Father-daughter dance

Big picture
The GHV Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) students, under the leadership of Mrs. Vansickel, had their annual Father-Daughter Dance this past weekend. This was the first year back after a two year absence.

The dance was a success with a Red Carpet theme. Mrs. Vansickel and her students spent a tremendous amount of time putting this event together. In addition, there are a lot of people involved behind the scenes to make the dance come together, including GHV staff and community members as well. There are too many people to count!

The Father-Daughter Dance is a great example of our school and community partnering together around a shared vision. And I absolutely love to see our high school students interacting with our younger students.

A big shout out to our FCCLA members and Mrs. Vansickel for her leadership. I hope many amazing memories were made for those who played a part in this event and especially for the dads and daughters who attended!

John V. Hanson Career Center

Mrs. Bierle and I took just under 20 GHV juniors for their second visit to the John V. Hanson Career Center in Forest City this past week. These students are interested in attending the Career Center for the 2022/23 school year thanks to our partnership with NIACC.

Our GHV students joined students from Forest City to get more hands on, in depth exposure to the areas they are interested in pursuing. The four academies are Advanced Manufacturing, Construction Trades, Information Technology, and Health Careers. Students will earn college credit by enrolling in NIACC classes at the Career Center their senior year.

Once again, I love seeing GHV partnering with the community in order to provide these amazing opportunities for our kids!

NHS Blood Drive

Big picture
Mrs. Mitchell and the GHV Chapter of the National Honor Society sponsored their second blood drive of the year this past Friday. According to the Community Blood Center, 4.5 million Americans will a need blood transfusion each year. Someone needs blood every two seconds, and one pint of blood can save up to three lives.

Thanks to Mrs. Mitchell and our NHS for sponsoring this important, life saving event!

As you can see, our staff and students at GHVHS have been busy learning, leading, and connecting with each other and our community.

This week we have band, FFA, and soccer events to look forward to, along with many other activities going on both in and out of the classroom.

We have so much to be proud of at GHVHS!
