The Burruss Weekly
A Note from Dr. Johnson
January 4, 2022
Dear Burruss Families,
Happy New Year! We are so excited to welcome back your kids tomorrow! Please make sure they come with a good coat, as we will go outside for recess as the weather permits. If your child needs a new coat, please let me know and I will discreetly get one for him/her. Most importantly, PLEASE PUT YOUR CHILD'S NAME on any article of clothing that they can remove here at school: jackets, coats, cardigans, hoodies, etc. Please also label water bottles and lunch boxes!
While we are so thrilled to be back in classrooms, I do still feel hesitant about large indoor gatherings; therefore, we will delay in-person student assemblies for a little while longer. We are going to do a virtual student recognition celebration at the end of January, with hopes of being back in the cafeteria for assemblies later in the winter and spring. More details coming soon.
MAP Math Testing will be administered schoolwide on Tuesday, January 18 at 9am, and the Reading MAP test will be administered schoolwide on Thursday, January 20 at 9am.
Thank you for the generosity you showered on our staff during the holidays. We felt so loved and supported!
Kind regards,
Dr. Jillian Johnson
Principal
Winter Tutoring Program
Sessions will run through March 31, 2022.
Students will be placed in small groups with a consistent tutor; therefore, it is important that families commit to attending both sessions each week for optimal academic growth.
If you are interested in participating in our tutoring program, please complete the form linked below before January 14. Once all forms are submitted, we will form groups and follow up with the details for your child's tutoring group: day, teacher, etc.

Burruss Visitors and Guests
We are so thrilled to have our amazing community back in our building, but we do ask that you respect our health, safety, and instructional time by adhering to the visitor guidelines below:
All visitors must sign in at the front office and present your photo ID to be scanned into our Raptor visitor database. A visitor sticker will be printed and must be visibly worn in the building at all times. Visitors may not go to classrooms unless it has been pre-planned with the classroom teacher.
Lunch visitors will have VIP seating on the cafeteria stage to eat with your child. Visitors may not sit at the general classroom lunch tables with other students. If you are coming for lunch with your child, please make sure you arrive on time to check in at the front office, and you must check out at the office right after lunch. Lunch guests may not walk through the hallways with the class of students. You may verify with your child's teacher or the front office to know your child's specific lunch time.

NAEP Testing for 4th Grade in February
NAEP Assessment for 4th Grade
Burruss 4th graders will participate in the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) on February 17th, 2022. NAEP is the largest nationally representative and continuing assessment of what students know and can do in various subjects. The assessment takes approximately 2 hours for most students, which includes transition time, directions, and completion of survey questions.
The information collected is used for statistical purposes only.
· Your child’s grades will not be affected.
· Students may be excused for any reason, are not required to complete the assessment, and may skip any question.
· While the assessment is voluntary, NAEP depends on student participation to help policymakers improve education. However, if you do not want your child to participate, please notify your child’s teacher.
A brochure that explains what participation in NAEP means for you and your child is available at http://nces.ed.gov/nationsreportcard/pdf/parents/2012469.pdf
