Te Karere a te Tumuaki - Principal's Message
Tēnā koutou katoa (hello everyone). We've had a lovely week to finish off Term 2. On Sunday we had a massive turn out for the working bee - it was so special to see so many people here to help out. We planted 100 harakeke, 100 grasses and 800 native trees - all funded through the awesome 'Ruamahanga Restoration Trust'. Special thanks to this organisation for the $3,800 the contributed to the purchasing of native plants that have gone in along our water ways and around the transpiration field in the bike track area.
My message is quite long this week so I've broken it up into bite sized pieces. Please read on.
Please help the Ruamahanga Restoration Trust to help schools around the Wairarapa by supporting the Ruamahanga Restoration Trust 'Schools Behind Our River' funding project by using this link to the Givealittle page. This way anyone can make a difference by donating something towards just one flax seedling or native tree for schools and students across the Wairarapa.
As well as the native planting, we also had a separate project happening on the same day - the Community Orchard Project. This has been generously supported by Countdown Supermarket who approved a $1,500 grant application. A team of parents and students, cleared the overgrown area behind the pig pen/vege garden, planted 20 fruit trees and built a berry house.
As part of the Countdown Community Orchard Project, we had the generous help of Brent Nunn (Washit Property Services - www.washit.co.nz) who spent the day on his digger creating a pathway through the orchard area. Thanks so much Brent, we very much appreciate you giving up your day to help. During the week the kids have been busy putting down lime along the pathway - all volunteer work, kids who want to give up their lunch times to help. Ka pai team.
Sophie Mitchell and her partner Sam spent the weekend prior, collecting, transporting and unloading over 600 tyres for us to plant our natives into. The tyres offer awesome protection from the elements and when filled up with mulch from Treescape, will give them the ultimate start to a healthy growing season. Thanks Sophie & Sam.
Principal's Outing
I had an amazing morning out with an outstanding group of students on Thursday - well done Michael Nip; Rex Hartley-Meilink; Nirvana Charters; Willa Holdaway; James Strang; Evie Dick; Dakota Murphy; Zoe Cates; Fergus McGuinness; Tim Berryman; Benji Gardner & India Williams. These students were selected by their teachers for constantly demonstrating manaakitanga, ako and kaitiakitanga during the term. We went to the Masterton indoor pools, had ice-cream at McDonalds followed by pizza back at school. Thanks to Bron Wood for helping with transport and supervision. James & Micael were sick on the day and will join us next term.
Kapa Haka Exchange with Opaki
We had a kapa haka exchange with our friends from Opaki School on Monday. It was awesome to share our performance sets with each other as part of our preparations for the Wairarapa Kapa Haka Festival in Term 3. We are already looking forward to the next time our two schools meet up.
Year 7&8 Carterton Schools Activity Day
Our Year 7&8 students from Onoke Syndicate mixed up with other intermediate students from the Carterton Area on Wednesday for a range of activities. We hosted cooking and mountain bike track workshops here at Gladstone School.
Onoke End of Term Challenge
The challenge was on in Onoke today (Friday) to create something out of 'nothing' or what ever they could find. I was impressed with the creativity. Here are some of the designs.
Star-Safari.nz
Loving the star dome - Ka Pai Carterton helped us secure an Astronomy experience with the Star-Safari.nz team, thanks to the significant local interest in the recent competition!
Thanks to Haritina Mogosanu and Sam Leske for setting up their portable planetarium and mini mars rover to provide an awesome educational experience for our tamariki on the last day of term.
This experience followed on brilliantly from our Matariki breakfast and learnings. If you missed it on FB, here is a copy of the photo Whaea Micaela took last Friday morning together with some instructions on how to find the cluster in the early morning.
Junior Netball - Term 4 Interest
Descriptive Writing in Onoke
Reports went out on Wednesday and we hope you all enjoy celebrating your children's success with them over the holidays. We have an outstanding bunch of kids here and think they are all awesome. Please let us know if there are any errors in the reports of if you would like a digital copy emailed to you (principal@gladstone.1.nz).
A big thanks is extended to the staff for putting in 110% again this term and for participating fully in the professional development we have been working through - structured literacy; neurodiverse-friendly teaching & learning programmes; PaCT and the implementation of more te reo Māori use.
All in all, it's been another great term here at Gladstone School. We wish you all a happy, relaxing winter break and look forward to seeing you back for an action packed Term 3 (Life Education; 3 way conferences; math-a-rappa; kiwi hoops basketball programme; production; dance splash; kapa haka festival; Onoke camp Rotorua).
Lastly, if anyone is about in the first week of the school holidays and can feed our chickens, can you please email Belinda on principal@gladstone1.school.nz or text 0276140777. On that note you won't believe it but Ivy is actually Ivan - 'she' is actually a 'he', the Masons might be getting another rooster!
Ngā manaakitanga,

The Gladstone Project and Wairarapa Winter Jackets
Winter has finally arrived, and with the colder weather upon us our thoughts are with those who may be struggling to keep their families warm this winter. With this in mind, The Gladstone Project is supporting Wairarapa Winter Jackets - an incredible initiative that takes donations of jackets and warm winter clothing and gives it directly to those in need.
If you have any spare clean jackets, jumpers, merinos or thermals in good condition, please pop them down to the Gladstone School office - we will be collecting for the month of July, and will pass them on to the Wairarapa Winter Jackets team to redistribute.
Conversely, if you need warm jackets or clothing for your family, please get in touch with the team via their Facebook page facebook.com/wairarapawinterjackets. Let them know the ages/sizes you need and they’ll sort you out, no questions asked!

Email Feedback - Wonderful Gladdy Kids
Kia ora Graham and Belinda,
After a great week with you at Gladstone at the start of the year I hit the books to learn a bit about teaching and recently I have been placed at South Featherston School for my first big teaching experience block.
I felt the need to drop you a quick note after seeing some of your tamariki in Martinborough today at kaitiaki academy. I was there for the morning with the SFS students and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
I was really impressed by the behavior of the Gladstone school students and by their attitude to learning and participating. You can be really proud about the way that they conducted themselves and they should be proud of themselves too. I think they were probably the most engaged out of all the schools present and they have clearly been putting the effort into their learning as their knowledge of the waiata and mau rakau was great.
They certainly demonstrated manaakitanga and whanaungatanga and are wonderful ambassadors for your school.
I have also bumped into Gladstone tamariki at other events and I should also mention the Featherston booktown speed date an author event. I was fortunate enough to spend some time with the four students that you sent along to that event and again I was blown away by their enthusiasm and engagement. I think it was Olivia and Rosie from Onoke at that event but I don’t remember the names of the other two from Ruamahanga.
Anyway, you are turning out some really great people and it’s been really cool for me to see them out in the community.
All the best,
Ed
