PCHS Pirate Update
September 1, 2020
From Your Principal
Greetings Pirate Families:
Happy Tuesday! We have less than a week before school starts and we are excited to greet students next week. Please review the following information as there have been some updates and adjustments to policy and expectations at the high school. Enclosed we have included the first two days of school schedule. The schedule includes students walking through their class schedule, participating in some social distance engaging activities, and attending some workshops around student services, digital citizenship, and a class meeting with the administration.
The theme of the first two days will be "A MASKarade Party". Each student will receive a free mask upon entrance of the high school. The band and cheerleaders will welcome our students at the beginning of each day. Our goal is to make the first two days as inviting as possible, we are excited to share the decorations that have been added to the building.
The first day of school will be September 8th, which 'A students' (A-K) will attend in person. Staff will send out a virtual message to all 'B students' (L-Z) on the first day of school to welcome them and share some expectations about their first day the following day. As we adapt to the new guidelines provided by the CDC please review some of the expectations we will be reviewing with students the first week of school. Please note the following information below:

Electronics (Cell Phone/Earpods)
1. Electronic Music Device Policy- Student possession of a personal cell phone at school is not in and of itself against school rules, however, having it out and in use during instructional class time is prohibited. Students will be able to use their phones before or after school, during passing periods, and during lunchtime. Earpods will be treated like cell phones; they should be put away during instructional time unless they are being used for academic purposes. Headphones may be used for academic purposes during class time. (There may be exceptions due to special education plans put in place for a student.)
Student Building-Wide Expectations (See attached document)
The high school is focused on setting the expectations for all students in the building. The matrix attached highlights four areas we will focus on this year and encourage students to exhibit the following statements: To Be Kind and Caring, To Be Resilient, To Persevere, and remain Positive. What does that look like in the classroom, hallways, school activities, and lunchroom? The building-wide expectations will define how students should exhibit positive behavior in the areas listed below.
Discipline Matrix (See attached document)
The following attached document has been shared with staff to provide some direction on how the administration will handle discipline. The matrix includes interventions that administrators and staff will use to help address student behavior. The matrix guides staff through three levels of behavior and appropriate approaches to student discipline.

Mask Expectations PCR-3 face-covering Expectations:
Students and staff are expected to wear protective face coverings when attending in-person learning. Face coverings are required on the bus and during all transitions such as, entering or exiting the building, passing periods, traveling to the lunchroom, lunch lines, nurse’s office, etc. Any time social distancing is not possible, students and staff should wear face coverings. Face coverings may only be removed when seated alone at your desk and guided by the teacher, once appropriate distancing has been established and can be maintained. Refer to CDC guidance for use of cloth face cover.
Freshman Orientation
First Day of School Helpful Reminders
We wanted to share these printable 1st Day of School Helpful Reminder sheets for both our in-person and remote learners. We can't wait to see our students on September 8 for our #PCR3FirstDay! The sheets share details on various items from student gear, to picking up Chromebooks and learning materials, to instructions for ordering curbside meals. We hope this will help our families and students as we begin a great school year on September 8.
Virtual Back-to-School Night/Orientation for Remote Learners
Parents of our remote learners will soon be receiving some communication about their return to school. This communication will include a form to submit questions and information about grade-level Back-to-School Night video conference calls that will be scheduled for the week of August 31-September 3. The conference calls will include introductions from all grade-level remote teachers, answers to the questions submitted, details on Chromebook and classroom materials distribution, and what to expect or a "day in the life of a remote learner."
Important Immunization Info for 12th Graders
If your child is entering the 12th grade, whether in-person or remote, they must have provided proof of the Meningococcal vaccine before they will be able to proceed with the 2020-21 academic year.
If you have not already provided proof of having received this vaccination, please provide a copy of your vaccination paperwork via:

Board Approves Calendar Revisions
At the August meeting, the Board approved changes to the 2020-21 Academic Calendar. Please note some buildings have communicated differently, but these changes are the most up-to-date. Changes include:
- Moving the First Day of School to September 8.
- Adding Staff Professional Development/Work Time from August 18 to September 4.
- Removing the September 16 Professional Learning Community (PLC) Day (2-hour early Dismissal).
- Remaining District Inservice and PLC Days will follow the previous board-approved calendar. In-person students will be released 2 hours early on PLC Days.
- Adding language to asterisks for inclement weather days, alternating schedule, and to note that the Board of Education will review the calendar throughout the year for revision, as necessary.
