Around the District--Welcome Back!
News from NPS Superintendent Gallagher, August 2023
Dear NPS Community,
I am excited to welcome you back to another school year! The first day of school for grades 1-12 is Thursday, September 7th and preschool and kindergarten return on Monday, September 11th.
The district has been busy this summer preparing for the start of school. Our maintenance and custodial crews have the buildings and grounds ready for the arrival of staff and students. Investments in security, wireless, and HVAC system updates will provide a safe and high-functioning infrastructure to support learning.
Principals Andy Wulf (NHS), Nick Markos (Rupert A. Nock), Tara Rossi (Edward G. Molin), and Jamie Sokolowski (Francis T. Bresnahan) have worked with their administrative teams to fill staffing vacancies, create student schedules, and plan teacher professional development. From preparing the building to evaluating assessment data, the work of leading a building does not stop for the summer!
We continue to expand summer programs for students. For the second year, the district was pleased to offer an Advanced Summer Academy for 7-12th graders. Over 80 students participated in 6 courses! In addition, summer Lit Camp, English Language Learners Camp, and special education Extended Year Programs meant our campuses were busy with young learners.
NPS educators may not have been teaching, but many of them were still in the classroom! For the second year, Newburyport partnered with Triton and Pentucket to offer 13 courses including Executive Functioning, the Science of Reading, and my own course Skills Based Teaching and Learning. In addition, in-district classes provided opportunities for teachers to explore classroom leadership, instructional technology, and sustainability. I am looking forward to seeing how they are reimagining teaching and learning this fall.
Our goal continues to be to create a learning community where every student, parent/guardian and staff member can proudly say "I belong here." Each one of us can contribute to that goal, working together to build a warm and welcoming community for all our learners.
If you are new to the district, welcome! And if you are already a Clipper, welcome back!
See you soon!
Respectfully,
Sean Gallagher
Superintendent
