Weekly School Blog February 25th-March 1st, 2019
Our journey and wonder in learning labs this week.
Wow! March 1st is here. It’s amazing to think how fast the school year is going by! It feels like it was our first day just a short time ago. We are looking forward to our projects for March including weather investigations, rainbow hair writing, dramatic play with Dr. Seuss, colorful loose part exploration, just to name a few!
To wrap up fabulous February this week our students were busy little worker bees! On Monday volunteers from the University of Florida came to assist in planting the school garden for the spring season. Student gardeners planted bok chop, radishes, tomatoes, romaiñe, kale, carrots and sweet peppers. We are eager to watch the sprouts grow by ensuring that they have plenty of water each day.
This week in yoga students continued to gain balance, body awareness, coordination and strength through a variety of Yoga poses. Some students used the animal spirit cards to gain mindfulness while others listened to the sound of the singing bowl to inspire meditation.
Students created wooden and flower fairies using clothespins, silk flowers, and ribbon. Fairies will go home next week with students. This project marks the culmination of our fairy project for the month.
As always loose parts exploration is abundant throughout the learning labs everyday for our Reggio Emilia students. It is exciting and rewarding to see how evolved the students have become in their use of loose parts. Watching them create intricate designs, demonstrate higher level thinking, reasoning and math skills is a true testament of the importance of loose parts in Early Childhood Education.

Yoga Bingo
I have been passionately integrating yoga into my life for over 20 years—I think everyone knows this. I’m always thinking of ways to have our whole TerraNichol tribe involved in experiencing the practice of yoga and mindfulness throughout the day and from school to home, in different contexts.
So that’s why I’m excited to share this Yoga Bingo for families to think about where they can practice yoga. Simply download and print out the bingo sheet below. Each time your child practices yoga or mindfulness in the following situations, they can color in the box. See if they can fill up a line or fill in the entire page of sixteen squares!
Remember that the various building blocks of yoga include breath, meditation, mindfulness, physical postures, physical affirmations, karma yoga, and character education. Any of these can fill in a square!
Some yoga and mindfulness practice ideas might be:
- Practice some yoga poses
- Practice a breathing technique
- Follow along in a yoga class
- Play yoga games
- Practice sitting silently in meditation
- Practice karma yoga by volunteering your time or doing a community project
- Start a gratitude practice like writing in a gratitude journal or sharing at dinnertime.
Let your children discover and explore various yoga and mindfulness practices. Encourage their creativity and let their imagination run wild. This isn’t about getting it perfect. It’s about experiencing the practice of yoga in various contexts.
Once they have played around with this Yoga Bingo sheet, feel free to come up with your own situations.
Have fun with this Yoga Bingo! Terra Tominelli~Founder
