Trojan Update
January 15th, 2018
Happy New Year!
Well, we are back at it and already into the second week of the new semester. Lots going on in this update. Hoping everyone gets off to a strong start this semester!
**The PHS community suffered two losses last week. Lynda Smith, our musical accompanist for many years at PHS, and David Richardson, former photography teacher, passed away. Please see below for further details and keep the families in your prayers.
**Registration for Fall 2019 is now underway. Please see the article below on registration. Remember: you can view the course catalog at this link: https://www.petalumacityschools.org/domain/533
**Varsity basketball had a tough week, dropping games to the visiting Gauchos in both girls and boys basketball. Looking for a bounce back as the league season unfolds...
**Wrestling continued its shiny season, still unbeaten as they look toward a huge meet on January 30th at home (Senior Night). Make plans to check out that meet in the PHS Gym.
**Girls soccer remains unbeaten after pulling out a 1-1 tie vs. Casa. They are currently at
7-0-2, pending this evening's match versus Napa.
**Don't forget the Crab Feed coming up on February 2nd. Please see the flyer below.
**Our WASC accreditation visit is coming up in 2019-20. We are beginning the work of looking closely at our teaching and learning practice. We will be reaching out to our parents and students in the coming weeks and months to help us with this work.
Have a terrific week!

Two Pieces of Sad News - Lynda Smith (PHS Musical Accompanist) and David Richardson (Photography)
From Cliff Eveland:
I received the very sad news that Lynda Smith passed away last night (Sunday). Lynda had either a massive stroke or an aneurysm on Thursday night and had been unconscious and in a coma until she passed last night.
Lynda has been the choral accompanist at PHS the last 4 years, and was also the accompanist when I was the choir teacher for 9 years back in the late 90s and early 2000s. Lynda has given many PHS students private voice lessons over the years, and coached all of the soloists at our choral concerts. Lynda has also been either the accompanist or music director of almost all the musicals produced at PHS in the last 25 years. Lynda worked on these musicals for little or no pay. She did it because she loved working with the students.
Lynda was an extremely talented pianist, singer, musician, and was more co-director of the choir than just accompanist. Lynda is someone who cannot be replaced. She was also a good friend of mine, so this is going to be difficult.

Sincerely,
Cliff
Mr. Knox added: "I am stunned by the news. I was with Linda on Thursday as we prepared the music scores for our upcoming show. I am terribly saddened to hear this as I will miss her awesome positive spirit."

From Krista O'Connor:
Mr. David Richardson, my neighbor of about 35 years, and former Petaluma High teacher, passed away on Friday night. His wife, Colleen, is also a former local elementary educator and principal. Dave taught at PHS for 29 years, retiring in 1992. He taught photography, yearbook, and sometimes Spanish. I think he was around during the earlier part of the Frank Wright, Bob Jones, Steve Stedman, Steve Ellison era. He owned and operated Richardson's Relics, the antique store out on Bodega Avenue for the last several years.
This is an article from June 2016 linked below about his wife Colleen's Doll Mercantile that operates in the same building.

Project Graduation - Please Read!
Project Graduation has been a Petaluma institution that provides a safe environment for our graduates on graduation evening. This program was created in reaction to many tragic deaths on graduation night. Since Project Grad came to Petaluma about 30 years ago, there have been no students lost on graduation night.
But it takes a team of committed parents to make this evening happen. Rita Schafer has been leading Project Grad since 2014. Her children graduated in 2015 but she has continued to run the Project Grad ship nevertheless. She has been ably supported by a team that includes Suzie Ransom, Fidaa Shaheen, and many others. Now it is time for a new set of parents to step up! The current team will put on the June 2019 Project Graduation but now is the time to step up and shadow these folks as we look for leadership in 2019-20.
Please come to our next meeting on January 8th at 6PM in the staff lounge at PHS. Come and meet the team and see if this is a good fit for you. We want to be sure our kids continue to be safe on Grad Night!
