We have the Right Mental Attitude
News from the 6th grade
As March is coming to an end, we are looking ahead to April, Spring and Testing! Everyone is getting in gear for testing season and there are things we would like for you to know from the 6th grade team. Important dates that are approaching fast for the students are:
Science CAP Test: April 4th
Social Studies CAP Test: April 6th
ELA MAP Test: April 10th
Math MAP Test: April 12th
ELA AIRS Test: April 17th
Math AIRS Test: May 2nd
We ask that the students get a good night's sleep before these tests and that you make sure that they have a good breakfast that morning. We would like them to be well rested and able to focus.
In Math, we are working on a project right now that has turned the students into the teacher. They are getting to see what it is like to be on the other side of the grading. They are creating review activities for their classmates to help them prepare for the upcoming tests. They are working with classmates and being very creative to show what they have learned throughout the year and test the skills of their classmates. They are also working on their technology skills using the computers, google classroom and the ipads to help them as they spend their time as the teacher!
We have been working in the classroom on some number sense skills- just trying to get the students to notice things about numbers and make connections with different things in the real world. The more students understand the way numbers work and how they can connect to the real world the better they can understand how to use them.
In ELA, we are finishing our unit on Figurative Language. Students engaged in several different activities to reinforce each type we focused on. They had the opportunity to discover various types of figurative language by writing on graffiti walls, playing the online game, Kahoot, and creating similes in our “Spin It” activity.
During the next few weeks, we will be diving into discussing the upcoming tests and testing strategies. We will discuss how the strategies will help them at school as well as in the real world. Students will be reviewing content we have discussed throughout the school year as well as creating works of art in the process!
We will finish the year by reading our last class novel, “The Land,” by Mildred Taylor. This historical fiction novel is set during the time of Reconstruction in the U.S. Students will flashback to a time where most people lived off the land and had no technology! When students move onto seventh grade, they will read another book from the same series of “The Land.”
In Social Studies, we just finished learning about the Ancient Civilization of India. Next month, we will spend some time learning about the government and the economy and working on our map skills. In Science, we have been learning about cells and physical and chemical changes. The students did a great job on their cell projects! I was SO impressed by their hard work! We have also been preparing for our upcoming tests. Once those tests are done, we will be using some new equipment that I was able to purchase through a grant. I am so excited to start some brand new, hands-on projects that use principles of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) with the students. It is going to be exciting to be in 6th-grade Science!
Community Connectors Group
The Community Connector grant group has been very busy! We are learning about media and how it has an impact on our lives. The girls will get a chance to “remake” a piece of media to give it a positive spin. They have been learning about healthy lifestyle options and have been able to try a variety of new foods and recipes. Our most exciting experience so far has been taking a trip to the EHOVE FAB Lab. The girls got to use lasers to make precision folds to make the perfect paper airplanes.
