MCCHS FRIDAY FOCUS
34th Edition: May 26, 2017
Pilgrims on the Way of Truth
- Over $24.7 million in college scholarships earned
- 37.5% graduated with a G.P.A. of 3.8 or higher
- 28.9% scored 30 or higher on ACT
- 53 Illinois State Scholars
- 83.5% are 4-year college bound
- 13.6% are community college bound
Consider this: the Class of 2016 set scholarship-offer records by amassing $15.9 million. To see this class not only top that record, but raise the bar by almost $9 million is extraordinary!
After all those scholarships and awards were passed out yesterday, the seniors were a little hungry today! They came together to celebrate their Senior Breakfast this morning in the cafeteria which was wonderfully decorated by our Parents' Association. Their theme was "Oh the Places You Will Go!" and our Honors Day demonstrated that these students have wonderful paths ahead of them because of all the hard work they have completed here at Marian. They ended their morning with a raucous viewing of the Senior Video in the Auditorium, highlighting photos spanning from freshman year to now. We could hear the seniors cheering down the hall as they relived four years' worth of memories in 30 minutes!
“Coordinator of Spiritual Activities” for Marian Announced
Bishop Malloy recently named Rev. Ervin Caliente, a parochial vicar at St. Mary Church in Huntley, as Coordinator of Spiritual Activities for our school family for the 2017-18 school year. While Father Caliente will not be full-time at Marian as Father Doyle has been, the plan is to once again appoint a priest to that full-time positon of Spiritual Director beginning with the 2018-19 school year. Until then, all of the spiritual activities that are so important to the faith life of our school will go on as always! We will still have daily Mass and adoration, weekly confessions, all-school Masses and penance services, daily theology classes and prayers, class retreats, and more. Father Caliente will coordinate all of the priests of the McHenry Deanery to ensure that there is priest coverage for all of those activities, and he and the Pastors of the Council of Administration will provide the on-going spiritual support that makes Marian such a special and vibrant Catholic high school.
Throughout the course of the 2017-18 school year, then, we will enjoy the benefit of seeing many of the priests of our area parishes present at Marian for all of these different functions. It will be a blessing for our students to get to know them, and to see their home Pastors visiting the school from time to time. Some of our students may already be familiar with Father Caliente, as he has been helping with daily Masses and confessions for the last two years. Father is originally from the Philippines, but has been a resident of the United States for many years. He was ordained two years ago by Bishop Malloy, and has served in Huntley ever since. He will be able to be reached both through the school, and of course through the parish. Please keep him and all the priests of our Deanery in your prayers, as we use this coming school year to further deepen the relationships our school has with all of the area parishes. And please also pray in advance for the priest who will be named full-time Spiritual Director for the 2018-19 school year. The Lord already knows who that is! In the meantime, as we express our gratitude and love to Father Doyle and wish him well with his new assignment, we are excited to welcome Father Caliente to our school family, and we look forward to working with him in the coming year.
FINALS NEXT WEEK: DON'T BE LATE TO CLASS!
We wish ALL of our students a successful finals week! Please see the exam schedules listed below to arrange transportation. We do need to stress that there will be NO TARDY ENTRANCES INTO ANY FINAL EXAM. We will not write passes for late arrivals - so please make sure your students arrive with plenty of time to get to their 1st exams each day.

Lands End Fitting Event Wednesday, May 31st 4:00 - 6:30pm
Representatives from Lands End will be at Marian Central on Wednesday, May 31st from 4:00 pm - 6:30 pm in the school cafeteria for a FITTING EVENT! This is a wonderful opportunity to try on different sizes and find the right fit for your student with all the different uniform pieces (pants, shorts, polos, etc.)
There is a Lands' End Shop in the Sears store in Vernon Hills, IL - so having this fitting event arranged here at Marian hopefully will be much more convenient for our families! No appointment is necessary to attend this event, so spread the word!
PURCHASING UNIFORMS:
We will not be making any changes to the uniform policy for the 2017-2018 school year, so please refer to our Uniform Visual Guide for requirements. We have noticed a few students wearing non-Marian uniform pants: please know this is considered "out of uniform" and the students will be issued warnings and detentions. Also - consider purchasing one of the fleece jackets or pull-overs we now offer as part of the uniform.
2017-2018 Course Schedule Update:
You recently received a mailing from Marian Central that includes information on books for next year and a copy of your student's Tentative Course Selection sheet. Please keep in mind that we are still in the process of finalizing schedules for next year. There are some scheduling conflicts, nothing major, that we will be addressing with individual students in the next couple of weeks, so it is possible that changes will need to be made to some students' course selections. Final placement in math and some science classes for the incoming freshman who were tested this week are not yet reflected on these course selection sheets .
If your student has a conflict we will be sending you a new course selection for them once the conflict is resolved. We will notify all families via the Friday Focus or through an email blast for incoming freshman families when the conflicts are resolved that might affect book purchases for next year.
Our Athletes are Amazing!
It was the shot heard 'round the county! In this past Wednesday's IHSA Regional game, Ryan Klinger's GRAND SLAM clinched the 11-7 victory, sending this amazing team to the Regional Championship game to be played on Saturday, May 27th at 11am against Marengo! Head on over to Woodstock North to "catch" our athletes as they power through their competition! Good luck to Coach Wid and the entire team!
Congratulations to ALL of our Spring Teams for a Great Season!
The MC Girls Soccer team took us into the post-season again, reaching the 2A Sectional game against Burlington. Although their season's journey ended with that game, we cannot thank them enough for always displaying such a high level of skill and sportsmanship. You make Marian proud!
Rain or shine (well, more rain than shine most days this spring) our MC Boys Baseball team always swung for the fences and powered through games as a tightly-knit team. Their season came to an end against Carmel in the 3A Regional game this past week, and we are so proud of all the guys for playing their hearts out all season long!
We knew this year was going to be a "building" season for our Boys Lacrosse team, but we couldn't imagine the turn-out for this growing sport here at Marian. Both the JV and Varsity teams remained determined and united, learning with every game and practice. We can't wait to see what this program can do as it continues to develop!
A SPECIAL SHOUT-OUT to our Athletic Trainers for their countless hours of dedicated service to our teams all year long. This amazing group of talented students are at every game and practice, making sure our athletes have the best immediate care possible. From keeping our athletes safely hydrated to making crucial assessments of sideline injuries, we cannot thank them enough for all that they do.

News & Announcements:
Cafeteria Snack Bar Open Before all Finals this week!
The cafeteria will be open prior to exams all this week - so students who need breakfast or a cup of coffee are encouraged to stop by to grade a bite! Don't worry about trying to run the account balance to $0. Balances carry over from one year to the next, from graduating seniors to siblings, or will be refunded with the graduation.
New Visitor/Late Student Automated Tracking!
We will be implementing a new automated security check in system for the 2017-2018 school year! We already have it installed, and will be using these last two weeks of school to test it out. Essentially, any visitor arriving at Marian will be required to scan his/her driver's license and the system will automatically log in the guest information and print out a visitor pass. For Marian students arriving late to school, they will simply scan their school ID, and a late pass will be printed out for them to present to their teacher.
With this new system in place, tardies (both excused and unexcused) will be tracked carefully, allowing us to enforce our already existing policy that states "After a student has accumulated 3 tardies to school (excused or unexcused) any additional tardies will be unexcused." Please see the Student Handbook (page 20) for more information on this topic. Countless research proves that student success is directly linked to attendance in class. The more we can encourage our students to arrive on time, every day - the greater their chances for success. This also teaches them important professional habits that will serve them well now and well into adulthood!
Spring Sports Awards - Moved to June 7th at 7:00 pm
Mark your calendars to join us to honor all our Spring Season athletes in the Auditorium! The awards ceremony will begin at 7:00 pm , immediately after the conclusion of the Athletics Department Q & A for incoming freshmen athletes (also in the Auditorium.)
2016-2017 Yearbook Sales - Ordering Still Available!
2016-2017 Yearbooks are still available to be purchased! If you are interested in purchasing a yearbook, please send a check for $75 made out to "Marian Central" to Mrs. Murwin in the main office by Friday May 26th, and your student could still receive an autograph insert! After May 26th, you can still purchase a yearbook until June 2nd, but there is not a guarantee that your student would receive an autograph insert.
