Benton Weekly Update

Week 22: February 1-5, 2021

February is Black History Month

In our daily announcements throughout this month, students will learn about important events and people in Black History. In this newsletter, we'll be focusing on Black Artists and their contributions to American Culture.

We are also honoring our Students of the Month for January, and showcasing some of the great work our students are producing in our Spotlight on Learning feature. This week is also National School Counselors' Week, so a big shout out to our fabulous counselors here at Benton, Dr. Sweney Black and Mr. Arenzana!

Misty Copeland ~ Ballerina

Misty Copeland is a Principal Dancer for the American Ballet Theatre (ABT), one of the three leading classical ballet companies in the United States. Born in Kansas City, Missouri and raised in San Pedro, California, Misty Copeland began her ballet studies at the age of 13 at the San Pedro City Ballet. At the age of fifteen she won first place in the Music Center Spotlight Awards. Her style, grace, passion, and skills have gotten her to the top, and made her the 1st African-American woman to be promoted in the ABT's 75-year history! Watch her dance here:

Spotlight on Learning ~ Media Arts

In Media Arts students created Abstract Data Selfies using Keynote. First, they learned how data can be represented visually by viewing a TEDTalk, given by Giorgia Lupi, an expert in the visual representation of data. Students learned about abstract art and began their designs by answering questions to a survey and representing their answers in an Abstract Data Selfie Design. Once this process was complete, students learned about the art of creating Motion Graphics. Students used Stop Motion Animation to transform their Abstract Data Selfies into a Motion Graphic and an animated GIF. Check out Noah's and Midori's Motion Graphics below!

Spotlight on Learning ~ Studio Art

Students are learning to draw portraits of the human face. The unit began by learning to draw each facial feature one at a time, and culminated by drawing an entire face. Ms. Hodge is very proud of her students' work, and here are a few:
