Maltby Messenger
May 9th Edition
~A message from the Principal~
Dear Parents,
We can’t begin to thank you enough for the wonderful “Staff Appreciation” week. Our tummies and hearts are full; our staff feels so fortunate to be able to work with families like you. Thank-you for your support of our endeavors and for sending your children to us each day.
The spring western dance is just around the corner! Come one come all!!! This should be a great event!! $2.00 to get in. Music, food, and fun!
As you may have heard, sunscreen is allowed at school without a doctors’ note. You may send in sunscreen and your child may use it as needed. However, if we have sun, our staff will not be applying the sunscreen.
Our Move Evade Defend drill will be Thursday, May 23rd. This is a practice drill that we initiate to help children stay safe in the event of danger at school. Children practice moving away from potential danger. For instance, if there was a bear on the playground, we want children to practice moving away.
Just a reminder, when cars are lined up waiting to pick up or drop off children, legally we are not to pass on the left and go into the oncoming lane. We have had patrols out lately and I want to be sure you are aware of the law. One option is to go down 99th and come along the back of the school.
The carnival is coming!! The Maltby Community Carnival is scheduled for Friday, May 31st. You won’t want to miss out on this community event! There will be food and drinks, games, activities and much more. Also, on June 7th, our former students who are graduating are coming to do a Senior Walk through of our campus. We are excited to see them! Come and join the fun! Remember, if our parking lot is full we can park in the church lot next door.
Our health room is a busy place! If your child comes to the health room, our health room takes the utmost care of them. If need be, you will be notified of any incident that needs attention. If your child’s needs change, please alert us of the situation. We are thankful for our health room assistant!
Some great books to be reading…….for our primary students, One, by Kathhryn Otoshi, about helping everyone get along, and Benjamin McFaddeen and the Robot Babysitter, by Timothy Bush, which is about an adventure during a babysitting episode! Both are fun and have a great message!
Thank-you for your continued support as we head through May and into June. It is only with your support that we can continue to succeed in the many things we do!
Sincerely,
Bonnie McKerney

PE News
Thank you to all who came out to support PE Night. We had about 120 big and little people that came to move and improve with us at Maltby.
Beginning next week 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders will be checking out their health related fitness, levels as they perform the Fitnessgram Fitness test. Many students will find out that they are not only maintaining their fitness level from this fall but have also improved enough to meet or exceed goals that they set! Be sure to ask your child about their cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular endurance, strength, and flexibility. K-2nd graders practice the exercises used in the fitness tests.
Remember – You don’t stop playing because you grow old; you grow old because you stop playing! A big thank you to those that helped with clean up!
Mark your calendars for Maltby Field Day on Tuesday, June 18. Many volunteers are needed to monitor stations at this fun event.
Thank you for your participation and support,

From the Desk of Nurse Joy:
Sun Safety for the Family
During the cold, dark winter months, many people long to see sunny blue skies and feel the sun’s warmth. One reason that people yearn for the sun to come out is because scientists have shown that exposure to sunshine can improve mood. It affects hormones related to our feeling of well-being and to stress. Sunshine is also important for regulating our internal “clock.” The production of certain hormones, serotonin and melatonin, are affected by our exposure to sunlight. These hormones are important not only for regulating our sleep-wake cycles, but studies have shown that they may play a role in fighting infections, inflammation, cancer, autoimmune diseases, and damage from the sun’s UV rays. Being outside is important for our health. But with all these benefits, also come some health risks of which it is important to be aware. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun harm the skin, causing damage that can lead to skin cancer, sunburn, and signs of skin aging.
There are things that we can do to protect ourselves from the sun’s damaging rays.
Choose a good sunscreen and use it appropriately.
When choosing a sunscreen, look for the words "broad-spectrum" on the label - it means that the sunscreen will protect against both ultraviolet B (UVB) and ultraviolet A (UVA) rays. Sunscreen sprays are not recommended as it can be hard to know if you've applied enough, and there's a chance that kids could breathe in the fumes. Apply sunscreen 15-30 minutes before going into the sun.
Wear sunglasses and protective clothing.
Too much sun exposure to the eyes can also be damaging, causing cataracts and other eye diseases. Sunglasses and hats can help protect the eyes from harmful sun rays. Wearing lightweight long sleeves and SPF clothing is also helpful.
Limit exposure by finding shade and staying inside during certain times.
Other ways to protect yourself and children from the sun’s harmful rays are to minimize the time you spend in the sun when the rays are the strongest –between the hours of 10:00 am and 4:00 pm. Play outdoor games in the shade or set up fun tents and forts to keep kids out of the direct sunlight when at home.
(American Academy of Pediatrics, Child Care Health)
The WA state WAC allows children to bring sunscreen to school and apply it. The recommendation would be for the child to come to the health room and apply it. That way if they needed assistance they could receive it. If applied once prior to coming to school, children would probably only need to apply it once a day at school.
Remember to Think Sun Safety
Appropriate Clothing at School
- Shorts must be appropriate in length (end of fingertips when hands are at sides), and hemmed. Pants and shorts should adequately cover boxers/underwear.
- The upper body must be adequately covered. Avoid cut-off shirts, midriff-baring tops, revealing tank tops and tops with spaghetti straps.
- In addition, flip-flop sandals can be worn but students are unable to run, or play in the bark area for safety reasons.

Late to School?
This is not only a safety measure, but also how the office can adjust their attendance for the day.
Transportation Notes
If your child misses the bus, please do not pull up behind the bus at another stop and let your child run up the side of the bus from the rear. This is very unsafe. Please go to the last stop on the route and drop your child there to catch the bus, or call Transportation and let them know you are behind the bus so the bus driver is aware that you are there.
Spring is in the air! The temperature is going up outside and inside the buses! Please remind your student that windows are only to be down two notches for safety. No arms, other body parts or items are to be out the window. Thank you!!
