Fall in love with learning...again

What's going on this week?

Picture Day

Thursday September 22 is picture day! Please remember that these pictures will be the ones for the year book. So, even if you are not planning on buying pictures the pictures will be used. Also, you students may bring clothes for pictures, then change back into "normal school clothes" if you would like.

Progress Reports

Yes, can you believe it, the quarter is half way through. We will be sending home progress reports this thursday. Please know these are based on the work students have done so far in my class and there is a big jump between second and third grade. Below I have a link if you would like to meet with me and conference.

Parent Teacher Conferences

Since progress repots come home this week I will be setting up parent/teacher conferences to begin next week. Please follow the link below and sign up for a time that works for you. If non of these times work, please let me know and we can make special arrangements.

Reading Unit 2: Autobiography/ Biography and Poetry

As we move into the second reading unit we are changing gears from Fiction into nonfiction and poetry. We will begin the first week with biography and autobiography. Students need to know the difference between he two and be able to identify them. We will end the week with a research project to read and write short biographies on a person of their choice. We will be using pebble go for the research site, its safe and school approved.

Then, we will move back into the world of poetry. We have spent some time there with our book study Love That Dog, but we will be diving down deeper and learning more about structure and types and writing all sorts of poetry.

Math keeps on moving, moving into the future....

We are still in math unit 2 and will be for the next two weeks. I know it seems like math has slowed down, but really it hasn't. We have so many teks to cover in this unit, it can feel overwhelming. We cover everything from counting money, to rounding, adding and subtracting on a number line, multi-step problems and we are still using place value.

Remember, I am adding the lessons we complete to their Pearson 'assignments' and you can go into Pearson, print pages, watch videos and look at supplement resources to help at home. None of these are required, at this point, just there to help.

Using strategies to show my thinking...

In third grade we introduce and encourage student to use strategies for both math and reading. In math we use CUBES and in reading we use STRAP. Students have written these down in journals and they are up around the room to help. Please know they must use these for EACH question and passage. I know it seems tedious now, but it pays off in the end. We will begin to tackle long passages and tough multistep problems.

Book Study: From the Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler

As we finish our first book study of the year, Love That Dog, we are going to take a short break from poetry and read a short mystery/suspense. Our new book will be titled From the Mixed-Up files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler.

We will be reviewing all the concepts we have learned so far about fiction and learning a little about the genre of suspense. This book is a higher reading level- end of 4th grade- so students will be challenged with some of the vocabulary and phrases, but I think we will get the hang of it. This story MAY come home for a night or two for extra reading practice.
