Absences and Appointments and Early Pick ups Oh My!
1. email - include your classroom teacher as well as the office jennifer.macakanja@nbexcellence.org, kimberly.mckenna@nbexcellence.org, shelley.sukenik@nbexcellence.org,
2. call the attendance voicemail (262.789.6588) Please leave your student's name, your name & relationship and the reason for the absence
3. use the Infinite Campus Absence Request (this works best for arriving late or half and whole day absences). If you are picking up your student after 2:15pm, it's better to email the office & teacher.
✔️Preferred method: Please copy all of your students' teacher(s) and office staff on the same email for attendance or end of day changes. This lets us know that everyone has the same information. If you email, then you don't need to call in or use the IC Absence Request.
If you turn in a note following a doctor's appointment with your student's name and date/time of the appointment, the absence will be medically excused and not count against the attendance record.
If your student has a fever (100+), they need to be fever free for 24 hours without medication before returning to school.
Transportation
🚗🚌 A friendly reminder to check the Transportation tab in Infinite Campus for your kiddos. If your end of day plans are different than what is listed, please email your teachers and the office ladies (sooner rather than later).
We will always follow what Infinite Campus says if we don’t know anything else. We have 700 kiddos we keep track of and greatly appreciate your help and patience!

{NEW!} Mental Health Minute
Nearly one in five children in the United States will experience mental illness in their lifetime (source: Center for Disease Control). World Mental Health Day, honored annually on October 10, was created to raise awareness of mental health issues and mobilize support to improve the mental health of people around the world.
This year’s theme, “Mental health is a universal human right,” highlights the importance of global well-being. The last few years have been taxing on the population, and many global citizens feel their mental health needs to be more of a priority - especially in those countries where so many are displaced or surrounded by wars.
In the United States, barriers to mental health services remain a significant hurdle to getting support. Advocating for mental health systems for all will lead the path to positive global outcomes.
The School District of New Berlin is committed to raising awareness about mental health and equitable access to quality mental health services.
The School District of New Berlin partnered with Care Solace to support the well-being of students, staff, and their family members. Care Solace is a complimentary and confidential care coordination service that can help you quickly find mental health or substance use treatment options matched to your needs, regardless of circumstance.

{NEW!} Bonus Parent University!
Parent University
Dear New Berlin Families,
Many of you now have a year of experience with the school district’s new approach to teaching reading. Maybe you have heard about the new state legislation called Act 20 or have read or heard about “The Science of Reading” or evidence-based literacy instruction in the news or on a podcast. You might be wondering what it is and how you can help your child at home.
This year the School District of New Berlin will host a series of seven Parent University sessions focused on understanding literacy development and how to help children at home. During each session, a presenter will unpack part of early literacy. Parents will get a picture of what this looks like in their child’s classroom and leave with activities to help their child at home.
Each elementary school will host an identical session so the event will be close to your home. All of the sessions will start at 6 p.m. and will last for an hour with an additional 30 minutes of question-and-answer time. The dates and topics are listed below.
Save the Dates:
- Oct. 19: Building Skills: Phonological Awareness & Articulation
- Nov. 15: Building Knowledge: Vocabulary
- Jan. 18: Building Skills: Syllables
- Feb. 21: Building Skills Multisyllabic Words and Tricky Words
- March 21: Building Knowledge: Background Knowledge

More information will be coming soon, but we wanted to make sure you got these great learning opportunities on your calendars as soon as possible!
Securly Digital Safety
Dear SDNB parents,
The School District of New Berlin utilizes Securly Home to help keep students safe on their school-issued 1:1 devices. You will soon begin receiving a weekly email from Securly.com that will show you a preview of your student’s online activity from the previous week.
We encourage you to use Securly Home to see how your child is using their school-issued device. To receive access to your student’s full online activity history, you can click on the Visit Your Parent Portal link in the weekly email (Securly also offers an app for iPhone and Android). You can enter the Securly Parent Portal at any time by going to www.securly.com, clicking “Login” and choosing “Parent Console” from the drop down menu.
The Securly Parent Portal contains three areas from which you can choose:
Activity - a real-time audit trail of your child's online activity;
Flagged - posts made on social media such as Twitter that have been flagged by Securly as potentially related to self-harm or bullying;
Rules - allows you to control some content on the device at home only. Please note that students’ educational needs related to device usage as determined by the SDNB supersedes parental controls.
If you do not wish to receive the weekly email from Securly, you can simply click “unsubscribe” in the bottom left corner of the weekly email.
For parents of K-3 students, additional limitations, including access to most streaming sites, are in place while your student is at school. If you wish to limit access to specific sites, including streaming sites, while your student is at home, you can do so by adding the site or URL to the blocklist under Rules in the Securly Parent Portal. Please visit the Securly Blocklist support page for step-by-step information on how to add a site to your student’s blocklist.
If you have any questions about why the SDNB is using Securly, please contact the Digital Learning Team at digitallearning@nbexcellence.org. Please email homesupport@securly.com if you have questions about how to use Securly Home or how Securly Home works.
Sincerely,
The Digital Learning Team
